JOB DESCRIPTION

The University of Sydney is Australia's first University and one of the world's leading comprehensive research and teaching universities - ranked 2nd in the world of impact and 4th in the world of graduate employability.

Since our inception nearly 170 years ago, the University has been a leader in improving the world around us, and this drive for innovation and impact continues to be a hallmark of the University's vision for the future. The arrival of a new Vice-Chancellor represents the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the institution.

With the incumbent stepping down early in the new year after a long and distinguished tenure in the role, the University of Sydney is now looking for a new General Counsel with the capacity to oversee a complex portfolio that ranges from the provision of legal advice, governance support and ensuring strategic partnership and relationship management across the University.

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior legal professional of the highest standing to lend their professional skills to a highly influential public-sector, research and education institution. The appointee will have the capacity to operate in complex business and university environments and bring deep understanding of the Sydney and New South Wales legal community. They will marry technical expertise with analytical and business acumen and the sound advisory, leadership and interpersonal skills required of a Principal Officer reporting to the Vice-Chancellor. Marked by personal attributes of integrity, fairness and sound judgement, the incoming General Counsel will be values-driven and inspired by the University's commitment to education for all and positive impact on and leadership in the communities we serve.

The role will require an unrestricted practice certificate and admission to practice in New South Wales.

For more information, to request the candidate pack, or to submit an application (consisting of a CV and covering letter), please contact Dr Ivan Costantino, Senior Manager, Senior Talent Acquisition at the University of Sydney.

Applications close at midnight AEST on Friday 25 June 2021.
