Under the guidance of the Site Coordinator, the Program Instructor provides direct supervision of a group of children in the middle school program. The Program Instructor will be responsible for providing a safe and conducive environment for children to interact and engage in age appropriate program activities. Plans and implements program activities that is developmentally appropriate.

The Program Instructor will consistently strive to demonstrate cause- driven leadership through the following YMCA Leadership Competencies Mission Advancement; Collaboration; Operational Effectiveness and The Site Coordinator engages in and promotes the YMCA mission through the core values: Honesty, Caring, Responsibility and Respect.

Essential Functions

  • Promote and incorporate the YMCA four core values: Caring-Honesty-Respect-Responsibility and character development model into all program activities.
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of services to support and motivate participants.
  • Develops lesson plans every 6 weeks that detail club and SWBAT objectives.
  • Supervises a group of up to youth ages 10-13.
  • Plans and implements program activities that are culturally relevant and developmentally appropriate.
  • Maintains safety and cleanliness standards in accordance with NJ childcare licensing requirements.
  • Must be enthusiastic and confident about what you are teaching and how participants are performing.
  • Facilitate group activities to ensure they are participating in a safe manner.
  • Attend any scheduled staff meetings or trainings.
  • Must adhere to staff uniform policy.
  • Report any suspected case of child abuse immediately as outlined in the Child Abuse Prevention policy.
  • Notify the Site Coordinator of work schedule conflicts with sufficient notice.
  • Adhere to all standards outlined in the "YMCA Employee Handbook" and "Site Specific Manual".
  • Keep Site Coordinator informed of all first aid concerns, discipline or other significant problems.
  • Record and report all incidents to the Site Coordinator immediately.
  • Maintains positive relationships with parents and other staff.
  • Must notify Program Director and Site Coordinator of absence by 12pm of the scheduled work day.
  • Attends staff meetings and trainings.
  • Responsible for other duties, as assigned.


  • Experience:

    Applicant must be 21 years of age or older.
    • Must two to four years experience teaching/instructing in a specialty program area (i.e. sports, the arts, dance, STEM).
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish), a plus
    • Flexibility in working at different sites, if necessary and previous experience working with adolescents preferred.
    • Demonstrate high energy, charismatic training approach.
    • Demonstrate experience motivating, inspiring and training athletes.
  • Education/Certification

    Must have attained a college degree from an accredited college or university in child development, psychology, sociology, education, recreation, or related field.
    • Current state approved First Aid Certifications.*
    • Current state approved CPR Certification.*
    • State Licensing Requirement: TB test by the Mantoux method.**
    • State Licensing Requirement: Current evidence from health care provider indicating that he/she is in good health and poses no health risk to persons at the center.**
    • Prevention of Child Abuse training and review of Child Care Policy.**
  • At hire or earliest possible training (within first 6 months of employment)
  • Prior to beginning duties

  • Skills:
    • Must be reliable and punctual.
    • Knowledge of teamwork, parent involvement, problem identification, family and group dynamics and good written and oral communication skills are needed.
    • Must have excellent communication skills in order to communicate effectively with parents, students and staff.
    • Must be knowledgeable in Microsoft Office Suite.
    • Ability to work under supervision.
    • Ability to stay alert to potential safety and security problems
    • Ability to get along with people of diverse backgrounds and be enthusiastic, courteous and friendly with children, parents and staff
    • Skills in planning, organizing, systematizing, implementing are essential.
  • Interpersonal Skills:
    • Familiar with the culture and mission of the organization
    • Excellent communication and organizational skills required.
