About The Role

Working as part of a research team the Research Associate: Colloidal Encapsulation will contribute to the research effort of the SA State Government Research Consortia Program grant, linking UniSA and University of Adelaide with a range of industry partners in Australia and Internationally, for Agricultural Product Development.

You will be required to research the use of novel molecules and materials isolated from agricultural waste to form complex nanostructures for encapsulation of bioactive components (also from agricultural waste), and their formulation into stable colloidal systems for deployment in food, pharmaceutical, and other industries.

The University of South Australia’s multi-million dollar Future Industries Institute (FII) focuses on building knowledge and capacity in core future industries and develops the University’s internationally competitive research capacity across four key strands: Minerals and resources engineering, Energy and advanced manufacturing, Environmental science and engineering, and Biomaterials engineering and nanomedicine.

Core Responsibilities
  • Conduct high-quality research in collaboration with industry and other stakeholders
  • Design and perform experiments for the encapsulation of bioactive materials extracted from agricultural waste
  • Design and perform experiments studying the fate of encapsulated ingredients in application-specific environments
  • Provide advice to postgraduate students, internship students and visiting students
  • Prepare/contribute to the preparation of refereed journal publications, conference and seminar papers

Skills And Experience
  • A PhD degree or thesis in the final stages of preparation in physical chemistry, colloid and interface science, chemical engineering, or applied science, in conjunction with relevant research experience
  • Experience in microgel/hydrogel preparation, emulsion preparation, and characterisation of obtained products
  • Experience in liquid-liquid interfacial characterisation, including method development
  • Experience using deep eutectic solvents (DES), or other non-traditional non-aqueous solvents, for interface/colloid science
  • Experience using Synchrotron techniques for interfacial/colloidal studies, in particular Small and Wide Angle X-ray Scattering
  • A record of peer reviewed publications and conference presentations commensurate with opportunity
