The primary purpose of the Director, Digital Innovation, is to position Deakin University as a leader in the adoption of digital technologies for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across metropolitan and regional Victoria. This will be achieved by bringing together relevant Deakin Faculties, Institutes, Centres and external industries in a collaborative network that will co-create and deliver strategies to address industry and State Government identified opportunities relating to digital innovation. The role will also be responsible for the management of the new Digital Innovation for SMEs Hub on the Deakin Melbourne Burwood campus, developing the core capabilities within that program, working with internal and external stakeholders and acting as a mentor to the participants. There will be a specific regional focus to the role, with important linkages to be developed with Deakin's advanced manufacturing initiatives and to support regional hubs beyond Melbourne including Geelong, Warrnambool, Ballarat and Bendigo.

The Director, Digital Innovation, reports to the Executive Director, Deakin Research Innovations.

Your key responsibilities will include:
  • Managing Deakin's Digital Innovation for the SME Hub in Burwood including the development of a new innovation centre and providing strategic guidance to the University and the tenants on the opportunities and strategy.
  • Leading Deakin as a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence for digital innovation and how it can transform SMEs into the future.
  • To generate significant competitive and commercial research income through strong and effective partnerships and collaborations with external stakeholders, including customers, sponsors and granting bodies.
  • Managing stakeholder engagement, communications and relationships on key programs within the Digital Innovation for SME Hub (DISH) which enable whole-of-University responses to challenges and opportunities.
  • Providing leadership across the University in engagement with major partners around digital innovation and growing the ecosystem to allow SMEs access to enterprise-grade capabilities.
  • Leading the development and expansion of the University's digital incubators and accelerators, including CyRise, to bring cutting edge capability to SMEs across Victoria.
To be successful, you'll have:
  • Highly developed leadership and management skills with demonstrated success in the development, coordination and delivery of complex programs, including managing government stakeholders and industry partnerships.
  • Extensive digital technology and innovation experience in industry, especially at a strategic level.
  • Strong professional government and industry networks related to the field of digital innovation, nationally and internationally.
  • Proven understanding of the SME and start-up sectors and its challenges. university research culture and the pathways for commercialisation of university research.
  • An ability to effectively represent a university at the highest level within government, industry and academic networks in Australia and internationally.
  • Capacity to anticipate, navigate and deconstruct Public/Government policy to identify pertinent trends and opportunities for Deakin to influence and/or benefit from industry/government initiatives and funding.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication with capacity to respond to Government white papers in a high-level manner.
