The Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice-President is responsible for the Monash University Administration portfolio, which includes the majority of the Universitys internal and infrastructure support services.
The Office of the General Counsel (OGC) is the central office within the University to deal with legal issues. We provide comprehensive legal advice and services to senior management and staff on matters that relate to the University’s governance and its diverse educational, research and commercial endeavours. We are customer focused in partnering with our University clients to deliver timely, accurate and practical legal advice. We also coordinate access to external legal services as required.

The Opportunity

The Director, Legal Services - Disputes and Regulatory is a senior leadership role within the Office of the General Counsel that supports the General Counsel in driving and executing the Offices strategic vision and objectives in line with Monash Universitys mission and strategic priorities.
The position is accountable for and has oversight of the disputes, regulatory and student matters stream of the Office to ensure the provision of specialist legal advice and services by those in this group is in line with best practice and tailored to meet client needs. Areas of law within the stream include litigation and dispute matters, general and research misconduct, investigations, IBAC/Whistleblower matters, and a variety of student related matters.
The position undertakes some of the more complex work within this specialist area of the Office and provides authoritative legal advice and support on topics within these areas to senior management and staff across the University, as well as providing expert advice at both strategic and operational levels. The position also supports the General Counsel with their complex legal matters.

As the successful candidate you will

Lead, manage and be accountable for the day-to-day performance of the disputes, regulatory and student matters stream in accordance with the Offices policies, procedures and strategic priorities, reporting regularly to the General Counsel and bringing to their immediate attention any issues of significance
Coordinate the work and allocation of matters to the disputes, regulatory and student matters stream and with the approval of the General Counsel
Provide timely, accurate and practical high-quality legal advice and support to the General Counsel on complex legal matters
Develop and maintain strong working relationships with an extensive network of colleagues and stakeholders
Support the General Counsel in coaching, mentoring and development of a highly trained, motivated and efficient team of legal professionals with a strong customer focus
In collaboration with the OGC leadership team, identify, support and drive the enhancement of operational, system, policy and procedural issues
