About the opportunity

The School of Biomedical Engineering was established in 2019 to facilitate collaborative research excellence in the field of biomedical engineering. Through our academic staff and students, our research will aim to serve the public as a thought-leader and provide innovative technology for industry, hospitals, governments and the wider community.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the team in the new biomechanical engineering and mechanobiology laboratory within the School of Biomedical Engineering. In this role you will have the opportunity to drive the development of single-cell mechanobiological methods for discovering molecular mechanisms of platelet, neutrophil and red blood cell mechanical force sensing. You will contribute to a project aimed at combining Biomechanical force probe (BFP)/micropipette technology with high-resolution microscopy, leading to the development of an advanced BFP/micropipette imaging platform. This platform will represent a world-first, with the capability to correlate mechanical stimulation profiles with real-time cellular responses of single blood cells with superior temporal, spatial, and force resolutions at 0.7 milli-second, 3 nano-meter, and 1 pico-newton respectively.

About you

  • a PhD in a relevant field specifically biophysical and biophotonic instrumentation and programming with a strong track record (relative to opportunities) in research, including a body of work published in peer reviewed journals. Applicants who have submitted their PhD for examination or will do so in the immediate future can be considered
  • experience in instrumenting or operating single-molecule force spectroscopies such as optical tweezers, magnetic tweezers, patch-clamp electrophysiology systems, micromanipulation and microinjection systems, or other biophysical experimental devices such as rheometers and parallel plate flow chambers and microfluidic system;
  • familiarity with using two or more of Labview, ImageJ, AutoCAD, MATLAB, 3D-max, PRO-E, SolidWorks and other engineering and physics software;
  • outstanding interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills and the ability to conduct high quality research with increasing independence and to present that work in an engaging way.
Desirable criteria - you may have (or be willing to learn):
  • capabilities in independently output processing models and drawings, be capable of CNC programming, use other conventional processing platform equipment to manufacture mechanical parts, and use 3D printers for part manufacturing
  • solid basic knowledge of cell biology and hands-on experience in PC2 biological laboratory, using flow cytometer, ELISA, Western blots, protein-protein interaction assays, protein/antibody purification and functional characterization.
Ideally, we're seeking an individual with a passion in computational programming on system automation control using Labview or equivalent system control software and an interest in artificial intelligence assisted image data analysis.
