JOB DESCRIPTION

Position Information

In 2019, Duval High School amalgamated with Armidale High School to form Armidale Secondary College, with an enrolment of 1200 students. 19% Aboriginal, an Intensive English Centre (IEC) and a partially selective stream. All staff and students commenced learning on the new site in January 2021.

The school has an ongoing focus on excellence and achievement in academic, cultural, sporting and citizenship areas, and is committed to innovation in education. Armidale Secondary College reflects a culture of lifelong learning and high expectation.

The IEC at Armidale Secondary College is the first newly established IEC outside of the Sydney metropolitan area in 40 years. It currently supports 54 newly arrived students from a refugee background as they prepare for active participation in mainstream classrooms. Armidale IEC provides comprehensive, specialist support through intensive English language, orientation, settlement and welfare programs.

Selection Criteria

  1. Approval to teach English as a Second Language (Secondary) and willingness to be a generalist classroom teacher in an Intensive English Centre.
  2. Demonstrated ability to prepare newly arrived secondary-aged students whose first language is not English for learning and active participation in mainstream classrooms in NSW high schools.
  3. Demonstrated capacity to develop and implement innovative classroom practice and differentiate to meet the individual needs of a diverse range of students, including students from refugee backgrounds.
  4. Highly developed interpersonal, communication, organisational and teamwork skills to build positive relationships with students, staff, and parents.
  5. Demonstrated capacity to teach the Intensive English Programs Curriculum Framework (Secondary).

Conditions

An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
