The Centre

KU Kooinda is a work based child care centre based within the University of Newcastle campus. The name 'Kooinda' means 'a happy place' in the local indigenous Awabakal language, our focus is on ensuring we provide a happy, safe and accepting environment, which reflects and enriches the lives and identities of the children and families that attend our centre.

The Role

This is a permanent part time position that will see you working 8:00am - 2:00pm, Monday to Friday to nurture a love of food in children aged 0-5 years old as you prepare their meals from scratch and become a key part of the team.

As the centre's Cook, you will:

· manage the kitchen,

· order stock (from preferred suppliers for fruit, vegetables and groceries)

· plan and prepare all menus from scratch

· assist in small group experiences with the children and introducing them to the wonderful world of cooking

· Ensure health and safety standards are maintained at a high standard at all times, meeting council health audits

The ideal applicant would have similar experience working as a cook in a Long Day Care setting, preparing meals to cater for varying diets and special food requirements of children.

You should demonstrate an interest in sustainable practices, growing, harvesting and preparing food grown at the centre and show interest in cooking with children and educators by sharing skills and knowledge to enhance the educational program.

To be successful in this position you will:

· be a qualified Cook with a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (or equivalent) OR

· hold food safety and food handling qualifications

· be a passionate cook who loves instilling a passion for food in young people

· Hold or be willing to obtain a Working with Children Check.
