Faculty of Medicine

The University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine (FoM) is an internationally recognised provider of world-class education and research and offers one of Australia’s leading medical degree program for graduates and school-leavers. Undergraduate and postgraduate programs are available in the disciplines of Medicine, Health Sciences, Mental Health, Biomedical Sciences and Public Health.

The Faculty possesses enormous strengths spanning research, teaching, industry engagement and clinical practice in disciplines ranging from the basic sciences, biomedical research and development, to clinical trials and public health.

Educational offerings in biomedical sciences, medicine and public health are informed and supported by research activity across a range of fundamental and clinical areas of importance including recognised strengths in cancer, skin diseases, brain and mental health, maternal and child health and genomics.

About This Opportunity

We are currently seeking a dynamic Communications Officer who will produce high quality copy and effective communications to connect with key internal and external stakeholders. Working closely with the Media and Communications Manager, the position provides communications support to the Faculty Marketing and Communications Team.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Proactively research and develop content for media releases, news items, student and alumni profiles and blogs as relevant to the Faculty.
Proactively identify and build rapport with relevant journalists to pitch Faculty news items.
Upload media content to relevant news portals (such as Scimex and Eurekalert).
Edit and proofread marketing and communications materials.
Pitch, attend and manage Faculty media events, including media briefings, exhibitions, information sessions and special dates.
Create content and manage its distribution via eDM’s.
Create and maintain journalist distribution lists, and draft strategic communications plans.
Coordinate content and manage the creation and distribution of Faculty newsletters for internal distribution.

This position is located at our Herston Campus, UQ’s core campus for clinical health teaching and research. Sharing premises with royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and the QIMR Berghofer Medical research Institute, the campus houses a vibrant clinical and research community that delivers innovative and contemporary research and education programs in a clinical academic environment. Conveniently located just minutes from Brisbane’s city centre, there is access to multiple public transport connections, onsite parking and cycling facilities.

Our Ideal Candidate

Alongside relevant qualifications and training equivalent to a bachelor degree with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience, education and training, the successful candidate will demonstrate:

Experience working with journalists, including responding to requests for comment, pitching story ideas and managing relationships with journalists.
Experience in editing copy for a range of channels (web, email, newsletters) and managing approvals with key stakeholders.
Experience in researching, writing and producing a wide range of different types of content including translating complex information into easy to understand, digestible content.
A high level of accuracy and attention to details, organisational and planning skills.
Experience in working within a creative, fast-paced, collaborative team environment.
A high level of computer competency, including ability to use Microsoft Office suite of programs, email, maintain websites, the Internet and specialist software such as Vision6, InDesign, Drupal and Shorthand.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position ending 31 December 2021, at HEW Level 6.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $80,784 - $86,768, plus super of up to 17% (the total FTE package will be in the range $94,517 - $101,519 ).
