Full Job Description
Canberra, ACT

The Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) is Australia’s independent national quality assurance and regulatory agency for higher education. TEQSA commenced operations on 29 January 2012 under the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency Act 2011. All providers that offer higher education qualifications in or from Australia must be registered by TEQSA.

The Government is seeking to appoint an outstanding leader to a Commissioner role, with appropriate expertise in regulatory practice and quality assurance as well as knowledge and understanding of the contribution that the higher education sector makes to Australia’s economic growth and national income. Commissioners are responsible for meeting legislative and governance obligations and making regulatory decisions, setting strategic directions, and monitoring risk in the sector. Commissioners undertake comprehensive analysis of providers’ applications, including the quality of the educational environment and education outcomes in the higher education sector, as well as financial analysis of resources and financial viability of providers to successfully deliver quality higher education services. The Commissioners are also collectively the accountable authority for TEQSA.

To be a strong contender for this nationally important role, you will need to demonstrate:

exceptional leadership and vision with an understanding of, or experience in, the higher education sector at a senior level;
strong skills in economics, budgeting or corporate finance, or demonstrated experience running an international or transnational operation;
experience in administrative decision making where a high level of judgement is required;
a high standard of professional and personal integrity and capacity to promote these in an organisation;
sound knowledge of, or experience with, principles and systems of quality assurance;
experience with the establishment and maintenance of systems relating to risk and control; and
high-level stakeholder engagement, together with strong communication, representational and negotiation skills.

Experience of regulatory environments, higher education quality assurance and strong financial analysis skills are highly desirable.
