Faculty of Science

The Faculty of Science is one of the largest and most diverse Faculties within The University of Queensland and within Science Faculties across Australia. The Faculty of Science incorporates six schools and four research centres. The units within the Faculty are internationally recognised and their teaching and research successes create a stimulating environment within which the Faculty staff work.

The Faculty is managed by the Executive Dean, who has direct responsibility for the physical, financial and human resources, academic matters relating to programs and students, and a range of other areas such as the development of research, national and international marketing, and enhanced government, business and community links.

The Central Glasshouse Services Unit (CGS) is part of the Faculty of Science. It is located at the University’s St Lucia Campus with additional resources at Long Pocket. The facility includes external propagation and growth areas and glasshouse space, which includes environmentally controlled, PC2 and Biosecurity approved quarantine areas. The main clients include researchers from within the University, with some elements for the provision of teaching material. Staff are expected to fulfil the duties of their primary position and also to contribute to other areas of the Central Glasshouse Services activities when necessary to ensure timely and effective support of the facility’s clients.

About This Opportunity

This position supports the Central Glasshouse Services Unit (CGSU) Manager in the delivery of quality services to teaching and research activities, operating and maintaining all Glasshouse Services equipment and infrastructure, and provides horticultural support to maximise plant health in line with research needs. The requirements of statutory compliance and safety must be fulfilled, as well as having the technical knowledge and the capacity to implement it.

This role will require you to be rostered ‘on call’ for a reasonable number of days through the year on a rotating roster.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment - you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have completed of a Certificate III in Horticulture (or equivalent) and have a minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Horticulture field. A strong client service orientation, with a high level of interpersonal and communication skills is a must. Certification in forklift use, PC2 Training, and senior first aid would be highly regarded. What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 6 months at HEW Level 3.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $58,005 - $63,991, plus super of up to 17% and recreation leave loading of 17.5%.
