About the team

Questacon’s Educator Programs Team is a small team with extensive experience in STEM education and science communication. The team develops and delivers innovative professional learning programs for teachers and other educational stakeholders across Australia. The primary focus of the team is the delivery of two projects:

Engineering is Elementary: As part of a three-year (2019-2022) partnership with Defence, the team delivers professional learning workshops to primary school teachers to increase their capacity and confidence to teach STEM in their classrooms. The team achieves this by developing units of work that focus on specific areas of engineering which form the basis for the workshops.
STEM Futures: As part of a partnership with INPEX, the team will develop and deliver three STEM Futures learning workshops that foster inquiry-based learning practices within educators and school leadership.

Going forward the team will develop new programs and initiatives and seek funding for programs beyond the current life of these projects. The team will also be exploring ways to collaborate with other teams across the division to enhance Questacon’s programs.

tertiary qualifications in education, science communication and/or a STEM field or significant experience in the sector,
significant experience in classroom teaching or the delivery of educator professional learning activities, and demonstrated knowledge and implementation of the Australian Curriculum,
a demonstrated understanding of, and experience in, the principles of inquiry-based learning/design thinking and the application of these principles in a classroom environment, as well as a demonstrated ability to inspire students and teachers in the subject matter and to encourage new ideas and experiences from them,
highly developed organisation, planning and program management skills, effectively managing competing priorities and strategic directions when achieving team planning and project outcomes,
excellent, interpersonal and written communication skills,
an ability to be resilient, adaptable and reliable in unpredictable circumstances, and
the ability to work and travel in small teams for extended periods in regional and/or remote locations.
What you will do

You will be joining an energetic and enthusiastic team to deliver Engineering is Elementary and STEM Futures across the country in both in-person and virtual workshops. The role requires travel up to 8 weeks a year in week-long tours, as such, the position is suited to a ‘go getter’ and someone who is willing to get stuck in and do what’s needed for the project and the team.

In addition to facilitating and presenting, this role will also involve working alongside the EL1 to explore new ways of delivery, increasing the visibility and use of the team across the division, and developing a long-term strategic plan for Educator Programs.

Responsibilities include:
developing and delivering professional learning activities for educators. This will include both print and online resources and the delivery of educator workshops,
managing all aspects of a national touring program including booking venues, organizing travel and accommodation, event promotion and distribution of curriculum resources,
liaising and negotiating with a range of organisations and individuals including state government departments, professional associations, schools and teachers to support Questacon’s educator professional learning activities,
maintaining a productive relationship with the Questacon Partnerships team to strengthen key partnerships in line with the organisation’s broader strategic objectives,
undertake monitoring and evaluation activities to support reflections on practice and to demonstrate the effectiveness of these activities, and
work within Australian Government guidelines (e.g. Workplace Health and Safety, Code of Conduct).

Prior to commencing, the successful applicant will be required to:

hold a full or P2 driver’s licence,
undergo a National Police Check, and
obtain, or hold, a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011.

Educator programs are delivered in every state and territory in Australia and the role requires up to 8 weeks of travel a year in metropolitan, regional and remote generally for a week or two at a time.

Initial positions we be offered as non-ongoing, full time until 30 June 2022. The successful applicant will work 37.5 hours a week Monday to Friday, with flexibility needed to work evenings, weekends and public holidays as required in line with the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science Enterprise Agreement 2019-2022.

This process is being used to fill a non-ongoing APS 6 position for 13 months. A merit pool may be established to fill similar future ongoing and non-ongoing APS level 6 vacancies should they become available within 12 months from the date advertised.
