The Survey Methodology team within the Longitudinal and Lifecourse Studies area at the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) are seeking an enthusiastic Research Officer or Senior Research Officer to join their dedicated team in delivering commissioned research to inform policy makers and practitioners to achieve better outcomes for families.

About us

We are the Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS), the Australian Government’s key independent research body and advisor in the area of family wellbeing, based in the Melbourne CBD. We produce research about ‘what works for families’ and make it accessible to decision makers, practitioners and the general public.

Our team

The Survey Methodology team are experts in the design and development of longitudinal studies. The team is responsible for managing the methodology and content development for two of the Institute’s flagship longitudinal studies: Growing Up in Australia: The Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC); and Ten to Men (a national longitudinal study of men’s health).

Requirements to be successful

This role is responsible for providing support with the design of survey content and methodology for two nationally significant longitudinal studies. Required skills include:

  • An understanding of the principles underlying the development of content and methodology for social science surveys.
  • The ability to produce high quality work to support survey research activities, while juggling competing deadlines.
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with key research partners and other project stakeholders.
  • A flexible approach to diverse work demands and the ability to work independently.
  • Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in an appropriate social or behavioural science (e.g. psychology, sociology) discipline.


We will offer the Research Officer or Senior Research Officer, Survey Methodology, LLS position on a non-ongoing basis of up to 18 months (with the possibility of extension for up to three years) on a full-time or part-time basis (0.6 FTE minimum). The position can be offered at either an APS3-4 $58,748 to $71,092, or APS5-6 $73,511 to $90,604, (full-time equivalent) plus superannuation, depending on the skills and experience of the successful applicant.
