Technical Assistant

  • Full time, ongoing position.
  • Based in Beauty Point.
  • Support the delivery of safe and efficient teaching and learning (T&L) activities.

The Australian Maritime College (AMC) at the University of Tasmania, is the national institute for maritime education, training and research and is globally recognised as being a centre for excellence.

The Opportunity

The Technical Assistant actively contributes to the support and delivery or high quality, safe and efficient teaching and learning activities. The incumbent ensures core performance criteria of safe operations and student outcomes are achieved.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Support academic staff to ensure the implementation on WHS requirements and procedures during teaching and learning activities.
  • Undertake routine planned maintenance activities and repairs of vessels and facilities.
  • Engage with and supervise contractors from various trades to ensure that work is undertaken in a safe and timely manner.
  • Undertake workplace health and safety checks and audits of vessels, facilities, and equipment plus the accurate completion of associated documentation.
  • Operate or assist in the launching/recovery and operation of AMC vessels for the purposes of maintenance, training and voyages.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate.

  • Experience as a trade assistant or mechanical/technical workshops or marine industry and in particular vessels husbandry.
  • A Coxswain Certificate or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in minor carpentry, joinery, composite, and fibreglass repairs.
  • Experience in marine electronics.
  • Experience in marine and industrial coatings.
  • Ability to supervise students and trainees.


Appointment to this role will be at HEO 3 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $72,462 comprising base salary within the range of $55,906 to $61,933 plus 17% superannuation.
