JOB DESCRIPTION

We invite applications from suitably qualified and experienced Lower Primary Teachers for this temporary full-time position based on Yam Island. This role will suit an applicant who is hardworking, resourceful and resilient. In addition to these qualities, you'll be a strong communicator and demonstrate a personal and professional interest in using and developing best practice systems and processes to underpin both their work, and the whole of campus work within the local community. Early Years qualifications are preferred and permanency is available to the right applicant.

Living on Yam Island

The Torres Strait Islands is an island archipelago off shore from the highest of the Australian mainland and is home to the people of the Torres Strait Nation. This unique and beautiful region is best known for its pristine waters and amazing fishing.

Yam Island, locally known as Iama or Turtle-Backed Island is located 100 kilometres north west of Thursday Island in the Central Island Cluster. Home to around 350 people, Yam is surrounded by crystal clear waters which yield abundant fish. The traditional language spoken across the island is Kalkalgal Ya, with Torres Strait Creole also being spoken by some locals.

Local amenities on Yam include an IBIS store, sporting facilities, library and Primary Health Care Centre. The community is built near the airstrip, and there is both a barge ramp and pier for small craft and passengers. Access to Yam Island is by air, with Skytrans providing regular passenger service from Horn Island most weekdays. Additionally, there is a regular barge service operated by Sea Swift for freight.

  • Current full registration or current provisional registration with eligibility for full registration, as a teacher in Queensland. Pre-service/graduate teachers must have been granted provisional registration prior to commencing employment as a teacher.
