About the role

Located in Brisbane and reporting to the Campus Academic Coordinator, the Department Coordinator (DC) is a core campus-based academic leadership position in SAE. This role is assigned a discrete discipline or group of disciplines to provide specialist academic leadership on campus and within the faculty. The DC responsibilities correlate to three core areas of academic leadership:

  1. Content - Expertise in at least one creative media discipline;
  2. Delivery - Expertise in tertiary education practice preferably both higher education and vocational education and training (VET), understanding the student experience; and
  3. Resources - Skill in leading a tertiary teaching team, understanding the technical resources needed to deliver a program



Content

The DC provides discipline leadership drawing upon professional standing and discipline knowledge - expert practitioner, qualifications, scholarship or combination of any or all of these. An individual's professional practice, higher qualifications, industry recognition through awards or prizes are all acknowledgement of this standing. A DC also exercises collegial discipline leadership as an ex officio member of an SAE Program Committee along with other campus academic leaders.



Delivery

The second essential quality manifests in the leadership exercised in the delivery of units. As an academic discipline leader on a campus, the DC is responsible for overseeing the delivery of units in designated programs. An essential responsibility is the quality of assessment and the review of final results in preparation for the campus moderation meeting each trimester.

Concurrent with delivery is the pastoral oversight of students. DCs are the first line of responsibility for students in the program and coordinate with Student Services in all capacities to ensure students receive support and guidance for their studies. The DC has a variety of tools to assist in this task. Attendance rates assessment completion and information access (portal and Campus Online) provide indicators for action. For serious cases of academic progress and conduct a DC will conduct Student Progression Meetings as required.



Resources

A DC will provide expert advice to the Academic Coordinator and Campus Manager with regard to specialised equipment, software and other materials. Fundamental to this responsibility is assisting in the design of the timetable



The person we seek will ideally have the following:

Qualifications & Experience -

  • Demonstrable leadership and teaching experience in tertiary education
  • Hold at least a Masters qualification
  • Have industry experience in at least one SAE discipline
  • Possess superior interpersonal and communication skills

  • Excellent understanding of transferable skills
