Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI)

One of UQ’s eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 200 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, water, social responsibility, and safety and risk management. SMI is industry-focused and consequently works with many leading global resources companies and many small-medium enterprises and suppliers. SMI interacts strongly with governments and community. A priority for SMI is the development of talent and providing an environment for successful and rewarding careers.

SMI was founded in 2001 and since its inception has established a reputation as a unique institution for integrated sustainable development research in the resource sector. SMI is a truly global institute with staff and students from around the world. SMI’s people are also diverse in their discipline backgrounds, which range across disciplines including anthropology, geology, soil science, sociology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering, mineral processing and mine management.

Established in 1998, the goals of the Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC) are to conduct research in occupational safety and health, risk management, and human factors; to integrate the results of this research into postgraduate and continuing education programs in safety and health risk management delivered to the minerals industry and provide consultancy services to assist industry reduces safety and health risks.

About This Opportunity

Undertake independent and/or team research that where possible, impacts on policy, practices and/or commercialisation (where relevant) resulting in internationally recognised achievements in the research area. As the Principal Research Fellow you will assist in shaping significant and strategic research agendas that yield new insights and opportunities to represent and promote the discipline area in leading academic and research forums. In addition to leading a research team and mentor junior academics and researchers, you will be responsible for initiating and leading funding initiatives acting as the chief investigator in applications for external research funding, which includes actively seeking, obtaining and managing research funding.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment - you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

A Principal Research Fellow will demonstrate a sustained record of outstanding contributions and achievement that is internationally recognised in human factors. At this level it is expected that the incumbent will make a strong contribution in service and engagement roles and activities, including consultancy and training activities. A demonstrated ability to successfully lead a research team and excellent record of successfully seeking, obtaining and managing significant external research funding from institutional and commercial sources is essential to the role.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 12 months at Academic level D.

The full-time equivalent base salary for a Level D (Principal Research Fellow) will be in the range $146,825 - $161,756 plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $171,785 - $189,255).
