Research Associate in Ocean Mesoscale Biogeochemistry

Full time, fixed term position for 3 years
Based in Hobart

The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is the centre of excellence for marine and Antarctic research, dedicated to enhancing environmental understanding and facilitating a sustainable development for Australia and the world.

The Opportunity

The Research Associate in Ocean Mesoscale Biochemistry will join the Centre of Excellence for Climate Extremes (CLEX) Ocean Extremes Program to understand the way in which mesoscale processes such as eddies and fronts drive variability in the magnitude and transport of heat, salt, carbon and nutrients in the Southern Ocean.

Key Accountabilities:
In collaboration with the CLEX Attribution and Risk Research Program, develop techniques to quantify the biogeochemical signature of fronts and eddies in the Southern Ocean.
Quantify the temporal changes and role of mesoscale in Southern Ocean carbon cycling over the last ~20 years.
Use outcomes of your work to help improve the representation of mesoscale biogeochemistry.
Work collaboratively with staff at other CLEX nodes (Universities) and partner organisations.
Contribute to the research excellence of CLEX and UTAS through the publication of international journals.
Collaborate with the CLEX Knowledge Brokerage Team to communicate research to stakeholders outside academia.

Your Application

To be successful in the role, your application will need to demonstrate;

Level A

A PhD or equivalent in biological or chemical oceanography or relevant discipline area.
Skills in analysis and interpretation of observational data sets and reanalysis products.
A strong record of publication in quality, peer reviewed journals, relative to opportunity.
Advanced experience in numerical programming using python, MATLAB or similar languages.
Strong written and oral communication skills.
Willingness to engage with stakeholders outside academia.
Commitment to equity and diversity principles and to respectful behaviours.

Additionally for Level B

Ability in successfully supervising postgraduate and honours students.
Deep understanding of Southern Ocean carbon cycling and biochemistry.
Ability to carry out independent research and develop innovative concepts and ideas.

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A or Academic Level B and will have a total remuneration package of up to $133,842 comprising base salary within the range of $71,443 to $114,395 plus 17% superannuation.
