The 2021 staffing profile comprised approximately 124 staff (effective Full time), including 4 Principal class, 6.8 Leading Teachers, 6 Learning Specialists, 76.2 teaching staff and 30.4 Education Support staff. The school workforce currently contains no identified indigenous employees.

Epping Secondary College is a co-educational 7-12 college established in 1976. Epping is a northern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located 20km north of Melbourne's Central Business District. It's local government area is the City of Whittlesea. The suburb of Epping has seen substantial growth at a rate of 9.1% which has had a significant impact on the growth of student numbers.

Selection Criteria

  • Relevant experience and/or qualifications (formal trade qualifications and/or training would be an advantage) to fulfil the expected duties of Facilities Manager position.
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in coordinating, organising and determining work priorities with minimal supervision and oversee other staff and contractors.
  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal and communication skills to effectively liaise with school leadership team, staff, contractors and other agencies.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health & Safety policies, procedures, and an ability to manage risk within the work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate computerised systems, maintenance databases and provide facilities reports and analysis in a timely manner.
  • Dedication to undertake professional development to further enhance skills within the role.

The role will include attendance during school holiday periods as required - consistent with DET guidelines.

Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.

Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy. Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3. Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility. Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases. Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.

This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years. Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g. therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered. Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employees position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

This position will work in consultation with the Principal and/or Principal’s delegate to manage college facilities.

The key responsibilities are:

  • Manage facilities requests for maintenance, repairs and OHS issues.
  • Prioritise, action and/or allocate jobs on the facilities list to the relevant team member or contractor.
  • Manage minor/major projects in consultation with VSBA.
  • Operate relevant computer systems/databases i.e. XUNO, Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) etc.
  • Oversee essential services, ensuring compliance and documentation.
  • Assist with the planning and staging of school events i.e. BBQ, Parent Teacher Conferences, exam set up etc.
  • Undertake general maintenance and minor building and ground works.
  • Manage the use and maintenance of equipment within a work area and maintain a safe work environment.
  • Source and manage on site contractors with urgent or planned maintenance.
  • Respond to afterhours call ins and emergencies.
  • Unlock school gates and units on a daily basis.
  • Manage hire of school facilities.
  • Oversee DET cleaning contract and liaise with cleaning supervisor.
  • Monitoring of maintenance/service contracts.
  • Implement and observe OHS policies/procedures in regard to the maintenance workshop and other school facilities.
  • Property & OHS Committee, reporting to School Council.
  • Use of private vehicle is a requirement of this position.
  • Oversee relevant budgets.
  • Consult with Business Manager for purchase of equipment, materials required by facilities and other items requested by different faculties.
  • Other work as directed by the Principal and/or Principal’s delegate.
