Full Job Description
We are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced educators to lead the team on Murray Island in a temporary full-time capacity. Ideally, you will be a highly effective educator and leader will be able to continue to refine and develop their leadership capabilities in this remote and unique environment. We are committed to ensuring every student is challenged and supported to be proud learners who are responsible, safe and respectful. Our Indigenous students speak a number of traditional languages and this great gift is valued within the school and embedded into our curriculum offerings. This is a temporary, full time position for term two, 2021.

About Tagai State College

Tagai State College is comprised of 17 campuses and an Executive Office. These 18 sites are located throughout the 48,000 square kilometres of the Torres Strait Islands in remote Far North Queensland.

Tagai State College is committed to providing high quality Kindergarten, school education and vocational education and training to the communities of the Torres Strait Nation.

Mer Campus

Mer Campus (traditional name 'Mer Eruer Uteb') is one of the 16 Primary campuses that make up Tagai State College. The current enrolment is approximately 50 students ranging in year levels from Pre-Prep to Year 6. For most students, English is an additional language.

Language and cultural activities play an integral part in the school curriculum. The school is very well resourced and has magnificent views across the Coral Sea. Mer Campus is based on Murray Island, which is located in the north eastern area of the Torres Straits, on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef.

The island is of volcanic origin and is populated by approximately 450 Melanesian Meriam people.

English is spoken as a second language for most people and a third language for some. The Mer community has strong links with their cultural heritage which is expressed through art works, dancing and singing.

The island has a well-stocked IBIS grocery store and a Health Centre. There are daily flights to and from Horn Island and a freight barge visits once a week.

Your Opportunity

The successful candidate will focus on delivering the vision of State Schools Division and Tagai State College. You will play a vital role in improving the educational outcomes of students in the campus, leading quality teaching and learning practices across the campus and nurturing positive relationships between students, teachers, the community and stakeholders.

Heads of Campus are supported by their direct line managers who are Heads of School of the College Executive. In addition to this support there are Lead Heads of Campus who coach and mentor HODc in the leadership of their campuses.

There is a dedicated Teaching and Learning team based on Thursday Island who provide curriculum and assessment, resources, professional development and three pedagogical coaches are deployed across the College to support and mentor teachers in the classroom.
