Role Description/Criteria

The primary objective of the Learning Support Officer is to work with initiative and collaboratively with classroom staff by supporting them to enhance the learning outcomes of students. Knowledge and understanding of developing curriculum for students with diverse and complex needs with an emphasis on literacy and numeracy and contemporary learning practices is a must.

The successful applicant is a person suitable to work with children. The successful applicant will have a demonstrated commitment to the Catholic ethos of our school and to the Safety and wellbeing of children.

The applicant is required to observe the Care, safety and welfare of students which are embedded in the College policies and procedures.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

To work with individual students with disabilities, impairments or learning difficulties within the classroom and across a range of Learning Areas in order to maximise participation within the mainstream curriculum, promote inclusion, support achievement and monitor progress
To assist students with Social Emotional Disorders including Autism (previous experience preferred)
To work with students with physical needs including hearing impairments (previous experience and knowledge of Auslan preferred)
To assist with the basic emotional and physical care of students with special needs as well as to encourage students to develop a sense of responsibility towards their own education
To collaborate with teachers in the monitoring and support of individual students
To act in a support role to the whole class as appropriate
To assist students in their understanding and use of information given in class
To assist teachers with differentiation of class work, tests and assignments, as required
To provide experiences of success, build the students’ confidence in their skills and encourage independence in students’ learning
To provide appropriate support for students with physical, health, or social/emotional impairments
To collaborate with teachers in the monitoring and evaluation of individual students
To attend off campus school events such as excursions, camps, special programs, and activity days where special needs students are involved to maximise their participation and learning

ABOUT YOU

To be successful in the role will have:
Relevant work experience and a Diploma Qualification or Certificate III/IV in Education Support or Special Needs
An understanding of teaching and learning support strategies and the ability to implement these as required
Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and high level interpersonal skills including a capacity to develop constructive relationships with students, staff and parents
Demonstrated commitment to the Catholic ethos of our school and to the safety and wellbeing of children.
A valid Working with Children Check
Preferably minimum 3 years of experience
EAL experience will be advantageous
