About the Role

We are currently seeking expressions of interest for RMIT Online Tutors to facilitate online courses in the Bachelor of IT degree from May 2021.

Our Online Tutors deliver pre-planned academic content using the online Canvas Learning Management System. As an Online Tutor, the role encompasses three functions:

The delivery of pre-planned academic content;
The facilitation of learning activities and assessments tasks, including webinars and online discussion boards; and
The marking of assessments, and the processing and submission of assessment results.

We are looking for Tutors to assist with the following courses:

Introduction to Programming

Strong knowledge of Python 3 covering course syllabus is essential. Experience in solving programming problems in an algorithmic manner and previous experience in teaching Python 3 is an advantage.
Demonstrated ability to support students in troubleshooting problems in Python 3 (especially in online teaching environments) highly regarded.

Security in Computing and IT

Detailed knowledge of elemental cryptography, i.e. symmetric, asymmetric key cryptography, hash functions.
Solid understanding of different types of vulnerabilities and attacks
Be able to apply knowledge in cryptography to use security toolkits such as OpenSSL and security file system such as IPFS
Familiarity with security considerations and processes in the following areas: operating systems, database, network, web, and mobile computing
Solid understanding of current privacy considerations in the digital space, security considerations in internet banking, and crimeware.

Professional Computing Practice

Strong understanding of professional practices, standards and trends / recent developments in the IT industry, specifically in relation to:
  • Cyberethics
  • General ethical concepts and theories
  • Critical reasoning
  • Professional ethics and responsibilities
  • Social media ethics and FoS (Freedom of Speech) in the digital space
  • Copyright, patents, trademarks
  • Privacy in the digital space
  • Cybercrime and IT-related crimes
  • Online communities
  • Emerging technologies and ethics
Demonstrable recent industry experience and practice in relation to professional practices and standards in the IT industry is an advantage.

Cloud Computing

Proficient at Java, Python, PHP, Java Script, HTML, REST, etc.
Proficient at big data analytics and machine learning.
Rich industrial experience in application development using Google Cloud and AWS Cloud services, especially on Google App Engine, Google Big Query, Google Cloud Storage, Google Datastore, Google Compute Engine, Google Endpoints, Google APIs, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon Elastic Beanstalk, Amazon Elastic MapReduce, Amazon Lambda, DynamoDB, Amazon API Gateway, Amazon SageMaker, Cloud Watch, etc.

Web Development Technologies

Experience in C#
Experience in teaching of .NET 0.3 and/or 3.1
Experience in enterprise .NET development utilising databases, cloud and REST services.

User-Centred Design

Strong understanding of User-Centred design concepts and theory, preferably with industry experience in UX and user research.
Demonstrated capability in working with user interface prototyping tools, such as invision or similar.

The time commitment over a thirteen-week study period could be between four and eight hours per week, depending on the class size and course requirements, plus additional time for onboarding and coaching. In weeks where assessments are required to be marked, the time commitment could be higher. All work is conducted entirely online.

About You

You’ll possess a wealth of knowledge, industry experience and skills in your field of expertise. You'll have the know-how to utilise this experience to maximise the student experience. Lastly, you’ll be proficient in using the latest digital tools and technologies to deliver course material entirely online and in an engaging manner.

You must be willing to engage with RMIT Online facilitation strategies and be willing:

To be coached;
To reflect on your teaching style to adapt to student needs;
To implement feedback based on best practice and student feedback; and
To make sense of course content that may have little direction.

Qualifications

Online Tutors delivering a Bachelor’s level course must have a minimum of a Master’s degree in a content area related to the course and discipline. Qualifications should be accompanied by relevant industry experience. To be considered for this opportunity, candidates should have a strong background in information technology.

You will be available to start when the course goes live on the 24th May and be available for training the week beforehand.

Teaching experience in the higher education context, particularly online, is highly desirable. Candidates who have 3+ years of industry experience are highly valued. Furthermore, the provision of examples of previous Good Teaching Scores (or equivalent) will put candidates in good stead.

Note: Appointment to this position is subject to acquiring or holding a Working with Children check.
