  • Permanent, full-time or part-time arrangements will be considered
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill multiple Senior Data Collection Methodologist positions (APS 6) in two of our sections; the Respondent and Collection Methodology (RCM) Section and the Data Collection and Design Centre (DCDC).

About the Role

We are seeking creative people with strong research skills, a passion for understanding and influencing human behavior, and the ability to promote organisational change. These characteristics will be applied to assessing emerging and strategic issues affecting ABS survey design, developing new approaches to data collection materials and procedures, and measuring the impact of innovations to inform decisions about their broader adoption across the ABS survey program. The roles are best suited to people who would work well in a small team with diverse and complementary skills, and who are able to work flexibly to agreed priorities and deadlines.

The positions offer flexible working arrangements (in terms of hours and/or doing some work from home), working in virtual teams (across the country) and collaborating with external experts in other government agencies, academia and overseas in other National Statistical Offices.

As a Senior Data Collection Methodologist you will:
  • Design, conduct, analyse and report on research and evaluation tasks (e.g. interviews, randomized controlled trials (RCTs), surveys, analysis of metrics, qualitative coding procedures) that advance ABS questionnaire design and/or respondent engagement capability, and provide methodological support on these topics to other parts of the ABS.
  • Champion the respondent’s perspective and the significance of their comprehension and motivation in obtaining fit for purpose data quality and survey efficiency.
  • Work under limited supervision and manage work outputs while working as part of a team.
  • Present results of methodological work in writing and in person, and potentially present training.
  • Interact professionally with the public in the context of testing survey materials and infrastructure.
