About the role

We’re looking for a professional Principal Policy & Research Fellow, Disability with relevant experience who wants to join our 2,000+ team of staff and volunteers to make a difference on a permanent full-time basis, working 38 per week based in Fitzroy.

The primary purpose of this role is to lead, develop and manage a research and policy program for the Disability Team, within the BSL’s Research and Policy Centre. The role will initially focus on developing a rich and deep evidence base in relation to building community inclusion. This work will advance the BSL’s mission and strategy to effect systemic policy, program and practice reform through thought leadership and evidence.

This leadership role will engage closely with teams across the RPC, Programs, Business Enablement, and Marketing and Engagement to lead the development of high-quality research and policy outcomes. The incumbent will contribute to the leadership of the Research and Policy centre and the BSL through their active participation in the RPC leadership and BSL Senior Leadership teams.

  • Lead the translation and communication of data and insights developed through the Disability team, ensuring they are understood by the Executive, program managers and delivery staff, as well as program participants.
  • Lead the engagement and networking with Government, University and NFP agencies to advance policy and design of high-quality research and policy.
  • Ensure the Disability team develop papers, reports, conference presentations, policy briefs and peer reviewed journal articles that share team findings and learning to advance BSL’s strategic goals.
  • Lead the development of conceptual frameworks to underpin our research, advocacy and program development and delivery effort.

Salary will start at $123,419.19 per annum, based on skills and experience plus superannuation.

To be considered for the role and be successful in it, we’re looking for an who has the following key skills and experiences:

  • Proven experience in leading and building high performing teams and cross-functional and external stakeholder relationships.
  • PhD in social or political sciences or other relevant discipline and/or extensive relevant experience.
  • Track record of publications in one or more of the content areas
  • Demonstrated experience working with organizational leaders to advance systemic change agendas in the areas of focus
  • Well-developed media and external communication skills 
  • Well-developed influencing, communication, negotiation, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills
  • Highly developed research methodological skills and analysis, including solution oriented applied research
  • Highly developed policy design and development skills
  • Extensive experience leading high performing teams and conducting evaluations within human and community services
  • Demonstrated experience in leading and developing knowledge, frameworks and evidence in relation to human service policy and programs, (preferably in one or more of the content areas for the role)
  • Strong enterprise leadership mindset – collaborative, team-based approach to working and a high level of comfort working in a Not-for-profit environment.
  • Integrity, maturity and strong personal and business ethics combined with sound judgement and a commitment to transparency and accountability
  • Understanding of and empathy with the values and ideals of the Brotherhood
