  • Join a world-leading research team seeking to develop solutions to improve crop productivity using new synthetic biology capabilities to ramp up the rates of photosynthetic carbon assimilation.
  • Great opportunity for an early-stage postdoctoral fellow looking for experience in student supervision and research project management.
Position overview

The ANU College of Science (CoS) comprises: the Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics, the Research School of Biology, the Research School of Chemistry, the Research School of Earth Science, the Fenner School of Environment and Society, the Mathematical Sciences Institute, the Research School of Physics and Engineering, and the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. Staff and students within the ANU College of Science conduct research and delivers a research-led education program that encompasses the entire breadth of the sciences, supported by extensive international networks and by world-class facilities. The College has a strong tradition of research excellence that has fostered distinguished Nobel Laureates and Kyoto Prize winners and that trains scientific leaders in disciplines in which the ANU is consistently ranked in the top twenty in the world.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will help lead an ARC Discovery Project funded project within the Synthetic Photosynthesis laboratory of Professor Spencer Whitney at the Research School of Biology. The project seeks to enhance the performance of the CO2-fixing enzyme Rubisco whose inefficient activity often limits plant growth. This project makes use of new synthetic biology capabilities to (1) artificially evolve Rubisco in the laboratory and select for new versions with dramatic improvements in carboxylation activity and (2) introduce these beneficial changes into crop Rubisco via chloroplast transformation and nuclear gene editing. The position requires someone with experience in enzyme engineering, knowledge of protein directed evolution, skill in plant transformation and interest in student supervision.

The position is a Continuing Contingent Funded (CCF) appointment for 2.5 years and may be extendable pending funding availability.

For more information about the position, please contact Professor Spencer Whitney, T: (02) 6125 5073 or E: .
