PHD OPPORTUNITY
NUTRITION AND POPULATION HEALTH
SCHOOL OF MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES
JOONDALUP CAMPUS

Would you like to be part of a team solving real world problems in the field of nutrition and vascular health?

About The PhD

The Institute for Nutrition Research is looking for up to five outstanding applicants who are interested in pursuing a PhD in the area of nutrition and human health. Applicants may have a background in nutrition or dietetics, implementation science or health services, epidemiology or clinical trialling, food sciences, behavioural psychology, public health or medicine. The research will investigate the importance of plant foods and their components for healthy ageing and/or explore novel ways to increase consumption in Australians.

Increasing the intake of plant-based foods such as fruit and vegetables remains the foundation of dietary approaches to prevent disease. However, surprisingly little is known about the components of these foods that contribute to health, the mechanisms involved or effective ways to increase the consumption. Overcoming these knowledge gaps will improve targeted dietary approaches to enhance mental and physical health and more specifically, vascular, musculoskeletal and cognitive health.

The Institute for Nutrition Research includes internationally recognised medical and scientific researchers investigating how diet and lifestyle prevent or reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and other outcomes related to vascular health. The research is led by Edith Cowan University, in collaboration with other Australian and leading international Universities.

The projects available are supported by grants from the Heart Foundation, Medical Research Future Fund, National Health and Medical Research Council and industry.

Selection Criteria
Applicants should have a high level of achievement, including an honours degree or equivalent. Ideally, applicants would have published one or more papers in peer-reviewed journals. The degree could be in a range of relevant fields, such as nutrition or dietetics, implementation science or health services, clinical trialling, food sciences, behavioural psychology, epidemiology, public health, dietetics or medicine. Applicants should also have a strong interest in human nutrition.

Please Note: Applications are open to both Australian and New Zealand Citizens and Permanent Residents and International candidates. Due to COVID-19 travel bans, preference will be given to candidates who are currently in Australia and can commence in late 2021 or early 2022.

Applicants will be expected to apply for scholarships offered through Edith Cowan University. You can find out more about ECU scholarships, such as the ECU Higher Degree by Research Scholarship, at http://www.ecu.edu.au/scholarships/overview.
