About the role

The Residential Houseparent is a member of a team appointed to act in a pastoral/supervisory role of residents in a residential situation. The team is a group of people with a high degree of interdependence geared towards the achievement of the goal of caring for those in their charge. The quality of care will be enhanced when Residential Houseparents have a high degree of confidence and trust in each other; are highly motivated to abide by the values of the College; and, at all times, will do what he or she reasonably can to help create an atmosphere of acceptance, understanding and respect. The Residential Houseparent assists with the safe transportation and supervision of students, driving the College bus for activities and outings.

Key Accountabilities

The Residential Houseparent is responsible for the day to day care of the residential students of Columba Catholic College and will:

  • Support the College ethos and foster a commitment of respect to staff, parents and residents
  • Exercise a duty of care and due diligence within all aspects of the role
  • Assist with the safe transportation and supervision of student activities and outings as approved
  • Actively support the Residential Leader in ensuring the execution and support of College guidelines and processes are adhered to
  • Complete entries in Residential Journal to reflect incidents throughout each shift ensuring accuracy and attention to detail
  • Support the College's Residential Newsletter with submissions and articles
  • Organise/Coordinate weekend activities and sporting as approved
  • Oversee and monitor the departure and return of students to/from weekend leave or approved leave
  • Actively fulfil duties in relation to the residential community as timetabled or approved (e.g. study supervision, yard/pool duty, transport residents to co-curricular activities, supervise dining room, sports, recreation activities, roll marking etc.)
  • Assist students with the development and maintenance of individual study plans
  • Support students to understand and adhere to school policies and expectations
  • Ascertain student travel requirements and prepare travel sheet each afternoon adhering to permissions
  • Encourage students with adherence to travel and leave requirements including submitting leave requests within the required timeframe
  • Assist with boarding fund-raising events as directed
  • Liaise with parents regarding residential/student matters as required
  • General administration and tasks as directed
Any other duties as reasonably requested to support the functionality of the College.

About You

  • Proven experience with the supervision of young people in a residential setting, including development and care
  • Proven experience working independently and as part of a team
  • Experience to support an empathy to understand particular issues that may be encountered by students in a boarding community.
  • Knowledge of standards of health, hygiene and safety in a residential environment
  • The ability to demonstrate confidentiality and discretion on matters relating to students and student wellbeing
  • Ability to manage time and conflicting priorities in a busy environment
  • The ability to demonstrate initiative and reason when dealing with students.
  • Flexible and responsive to the needs of the College boarding community and driven to achieve the best outcomes
  • Ability to act as a role model – diligence, pro-activeness and energetic
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with boarding community including students, families and staff.
Mandatory Criteria
  • Current Working with Children Suitability Card - The successful candidate will require a paid Blue Card before commencement as per the No Card, No Start policy developed by Queensland Government.
  • Commitment to undertake and successfully complete ABSA Book 1 and 2 within 12 months
  • Senior First Aid certificate, including Asthma and CPR components or ability to undertake
  • Food Handlers certificate
  • Current Driver’s and LR or MR licence
  • Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.
Desirable Criteria
  • Certificate IV in Work, Health and Safety.
