The position

Context
To support students’ growth as leaders who are adept at intercultural cooperation and believe in the value of a pluralistic society, the network has implemented a programme of exchanges between the Academies. These exchanges allow Grade 9 students to spend an extended period of time at another Academy, living and learning alongside students from different national and cultural backgrounds. When fully implemented, the Exchange Programme will form a defining part of the Academies’ experience, and will play a unique role in developing students as the future leaders of their communities.
Following a research and development process, begun in 2017, two exchanges were held between Hyderabad and Mombasa, in 2018 and 2019. The next exchange will include a third Academy, Maputo.
The International Exchange Manager leads the ongoing development and implementation of the Exchange Programme and its expansion to new Academies.

Accountabilities

The International Exchange Manager is responsible for the continued development and implementation of the inter-Academy Student Exchange Programme, working collaboratively with other members of the Academies Unit, and staff in the individual Academies. S/he will lead the implementation, assessment and development of the programme to ensure that the student learning outcomes are achieved and will lead the expansion of the programme to new Academies, as they open.

Responsibilities Include

  • Overall responsibility for consistent, high quality running of the exchange programme across the network of Academies
  • Management of the ongoing implementation, assessment, and development of the exchange programme
  • Responsibility for reporting on the exchange
  • Other information:
    International travel is a central part of this role. The International Exchange Manager will be based at one of the Aga Khan Academies (Kenya, India or Mozambique) and will be expected to travel regularly between the Academies.

    The requirements

    Essential Experience And Skills
    • Excellent interpersonal skills and a record of building and managing relationships, including remotely. Experience in building relationships with teachers and school leaders would be particularly valuable.
    • Demonstrated ability to understand school cultures and the ability to understand the needs of students and teachers.
    • Ability to work collaboratively with schools to ensure a consistent high-quality exchange experience for students.
    • Intercultural sensitivity and the ability to confidently move between different cultural environments and work with a diverse group of staff and students
    • Experience of living and working internationally, preferably in the developing world.
    • Excellent written and spoken communication skills in English
    • Strong organisational skills and keen attention to detail
    • Project management experience
    • The ability to work independently and to be managed remotely
    It is desirable that the candidate:
  • Has a post-graduate degree or qualification in Teaching, Education, Development, Project Management, or a related field
  • Experience working or volunteering in educational institutions or in programmes for young people aged 13-19
  • Has familiarity with sub-Saharan African and/or South Asian contexts
  • Has experience of developing and/or running service learning programmes
  • Is passionate about the value of intercultural exchange and international learning experiences.
  • Has an interest in/experience of monitoring and evaluation, and research methodology
  • Has experience in Intercultural Education, International Exchanges/Study Abroad programmes, or a related area.
