USQ is a young, dynamic university dedicated to providing quality programs and degrees in a flexible and supportive environment. In just over 50 years, USQ has become a prominent teaching and research institution providing education worldwide from three locations – Toowoomba, Springfield and Ipswich. We also have a number of outreach hubs, and national and international education partners.

Our Facilities Management team plans, develops and manages the University's physical environment and specialist soft services across the USQ estate, in support of the University's mission and goals. Specific areas of responsibility include carriage of the University’s environmental agenda, capital and minor works projects, land and building acquisitions and disposals, buildings and grounds maintenance, office relocations, furniture recycling, event support, portering, crisis and emergency management, cleaning, safety, security and parking.

Our Safety Team currently has a position available for a specialist in the biosafety field to be responsible for ensuring the University community understands and is compliant with its obligations under a range of Federal, State and Local legislation that governs research and teaching in the areas of biosafety, biosecurity and gene technology.

Reporting to the Manager (Safety) you will work within this small multi-disciplinary team as the Senior Biosafety Advisor to provide high level professional guidance and advice to the Institutional Biosafety Committee, University Safety Committee, and key University stakeholders. It is expected that you will drive biosafety and related projects with autonomy and vigour.

You will partner staff in the interpretation, application and integration of health and safety principles, strategy and legislation and you will also be the University’s responsible drugs and poisons officer to ensure that scheduled drugs and poisons are obtained, issued, used and stored in accordance with the provisions of relevant QLD legislation and associated guidelines.

You must have relevant tertiary qualifications in a safety or related field, with subsequent extensive experience in a relevant area, for example science, laboratory management or health and safety or a combination of relevant work experience and/or training. Experience within a large and complex organisation in the areas of risk management and compliance is key to this role. As you will be engaging with different cultures, backgrounds and levels of seniority, your proven ability to collaborate, build and maintain strong working relationships whilst maintaining confidentiality and discretion is essential.

Your success in this key role will be determined by your knowledge and experience in providing advice, technical support and strategic direction to staff, colleagues, networks, and external bodies. You will be experienced in conducting training programs including the use of technologies to enrich learning outcomes for academic staff on risk assessment and legislative and regulatory compliance.

You will be part of a dynamic team with the opportunity to lead and support the development of cooperative and collaborative working relationships in helping to achieve a coordinated and holistic approach to safety at the University.

As a staff member of USQ, you will experience a range of rewarding career, financial and lifestyle benefits, including generous superannuation, professional development programs, discounted personal travel and health services and many work/life balance initiatives. You will also enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and family-friendly atmosphere afforded by living in Toowoomba.
