About This Opportunity

As a Postdoctoral Research Fellow within the Pyrometallurgy Innovation Centre you will be responsible for undertaking high temperature experimental studies of metallurgical systems as well as undertaking fundamental and applied research with a dynamic team at the cutting edge of modern primary and secondary/recycling pyrometallurgy.

The successful applicant will design and conduct experimental research on high temperature metallurgical systems including complex phase equilibria and heterogeneous kinetics and apply and further develop microanalysis methods for slags, matte, metals and other phases occurring in high temperature pyrometallurgy systems.

You will also be required to contribute to the development of the undergraduate and postgraduate programs and foster relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

This position is located at our Long Pocket campus.

Our Ideal Candidate

To be successful in this position you will require a PhD in Metallurgical Engineering or related field of Science or Engineering (including but not limited to Materials, Geology, Ceramics, Physics, Inorganic Chemistry).

You will have a demonstrated knowledge in chemical thermodynamics, high temperature phase equilibrium and high temperature heterogeneous kinetics as well as skills in the development, independent design, planning, technical management and successful execution of research programs.

Knowledge of extractive metallurgy and pyrometallurgical processes, in particular copper smelting and iron making as well as knowledge or at least practical skills in electron probe X-Ray microanalysis (EPMA), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Analysis (EDX), Laser Ablation ICPMS (LAICPMS) are also desirable but not essential.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for 8 months at Academic level A.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $88,411 - $94,637, plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $103,442 - $110,726.
