SHINE for Kids is the only national non-profit provider of youth programs across 5 states. To lead the Macleay team, you will need to be passionate about education, child protection, social justice, and mitigating family fragmentation – so that children feel supported whilst their parent is serving their jail sentence.

Impact your community in a meaningful way
The Macleay Valley RISE Education Coordinator builds school partnerships and mentorship programs to support at-risk primary school children. Work with schools and relevant community organisations to foster wrap-around support for children with a parent in custody.

You will be leading established program to increase school attendance, educational outcomes, self-esteem, reduce antisocial behaviour, and school suspensions.

A typical day will involve

  • Act as a positive role model for children and young people
  • Working both autonomously and within a multidisciplinary team
  • Assessing needs, making assessments, coordinate health referrals
  • Carefully documenting case notes, general admin and correspondence
  • Program planning: fun, age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and safe
  • Regular check-ins with schools, families, and mentors to coordinate efforts and review progress
  • Collaborating with Not-for-Profit, local Aboriginal, Education Groups, and Government Services
  • Recruiting, coordinating, and mentoring a team of passional volunteers
  • Driving Work Health & Safety policies, equal opportunity

What you need to exceed

  • Education and/or social work qualifications
  • Several year’s practical casework experience
  • Experience conducting initial/brief assessments to uncover needs
  • Professional written/verbal communication and evaluation skills
  • Understanding the challenges that children of prisoners face
  • Aware of the issues faced by Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders
  • Clean Working With Children’s Check and Criminal Record
  • Current driver’s licence and willingness to travel if required
