The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be an outstanding early career researcher with knowledge of metallurgy and corrosion. The candidate will work on a project as part of the he Australian Solar Thermal Research Initiative (ASTRI). The aim of the project is to solve material related problems in high temperature energy storage systems.

The Research Associate will become a member of the Institute for Nanoscale Science and Technology whose researchers work on a range of projects in energy, environment, health and security. The position will contribute to the Centre's strategic research performance outcomes as well as the performance expectations outlined in relevant external research grants and funding.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Postdoctoral Research Associate is accountable for:

  • Testing and characterising materials and alloys (including joins / welds) for compatibility in corrosive environments at elevated temperatures.
  • Identifying and selecting candidate materials and joins for high temperature, corrosive environments.
  • Experimental design and sample preparation for testing under concentrated solar thermal plants.
  • Developing testing procedures for analysing materials in highly corrosive environments at elevated temperatures.
  • Develop procedures for upscaling testing procedures relevant for storage systems for concentrated solar energy.
  • Lead communication with partner research groups as part of ASTRI.
  • Providing guidance to PhD and honours students involved in research associated with relevant Centre/Institute research activities.
  • Providing written reports and publication content to supervisors about research findings.
  • Contributing to the reporting and writing of research grants and funding reporting requirements.
  • Delivering occasional lectures to undergraduate and post-graduates; and
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
  • A PhD in materials science and engineering, chemistry, physics, or a related field (if thesis submission is pending state expected submission date).
  • A strong demonstrated capability in material science and physical metallurgy.
  • A strong demonstrated capability in molecular surface analysis (desirable).
  • Demonstrated experience communicating research outcomes through a combination of oral and written media.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and manage a wide range of internal and external relationships
  • Demonstrated strong project management, record keeping, and data management skills in a research setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet tight deadlines, work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment and work with minimal supervision.
