Principal Research Scientist

Specified Calling Level 4 | Permanent Full Time

  • Are you looking for a chance to work on a range of projects within the Offshore Aquatic Science Team?
  • Are you interested in delivering world-class science to underpin the sustainability of the State’s demersal finfish resources?
  • In this position you will undertakes advanced scientific research, including the planning of programs across multiple bioregions, and lead research projects in the areas of aquatic science and resource assessment.

The Opportunity.

We are seeking an experienced Research Scientist, with significant experience in the area of aquatic science and resource assessment, principally focused on demersal finfish.

In this pivotal role, you will lead the collection and analysis of research data, prepare reports, scientific publications, provide recommendations and advice, and communicate findings across the department, to other areas of government, as well as to stakeholders and the wider community.

In addition, this role provides an opportunity for the ideal candidate to develop new and innovative research techniques in resource assessment applicable to demersal finfish resources and to design and co-ordinate investigations into complex scientific problems.


The Ideal Candidate.

The applicant will be required to provide high level scientific and technical advice on aquatic science and resource assessment, principally focused on demersal finfish.

Strong collaborative relationships with Universities, peak bodies and stakeholders in the marine natural resource management sector is required, including the ability to build effective and productive networks, and engage with stakeholders.


As a Principal Research Scientist your will be required to work under limited direction and demonstrate superior initiative and independent judgement to conduct scientific research, investigational work, manage a team of scientists across a diverse range of projects and contribute to the sustainability and economic development of the State with a focus on the resource assessment of demersal finfish, using your advanced skills in applied fisheries and aquatic science, and applied marine ecology
