One of UQ’s eight research institutes, the Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI) consists of some 200 staff and postgraduate students covering the areas of mining and geology, mineral processing, environment and rehabilitation, water, social responsibility, and safety and risk management. SMI was founded in 2001 and since its inception has established a reputation as a unique institution for integrated sustainable development research in the resource sector. SMI is a truly global institute with staff and students from around the world. SMI’s people are also diverse in their discipline backgrounds, which range across disciplines including anthropology, geology, soil science, sociology, hydrology, environmental science, engineering, mineral processing and mine management.

Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) focuses on the social, cultural, economic and political challenges that occur when change is brought about by mineral resource extraction. The Centre contributes to industry change through independent research, teaching and by convening and participating in multi-stakeholder dialogue processes. The team consist of anthropologists, sociologists, political scientists, economists, engineers, development and natural resource specialists.

About This Opportunity

The Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining is seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to provide research support in the social aspects of mining and extractive industries. Working with the Director and the senior team within CSRM, your role will be integral to support CSRM's overall program of research and education. You will contribute to developing a program of applied and contract research in the social aspect of mining, including the writing of proposals and other grant applications. In addition to various research duties and providing general research support, you will provide support to the Director and senior team on confidential projects with potentially sensitive and/or confidential data.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

Our Ideal Candidate

With prior demonstrated knowledge in the area of social impacts of mining, you should hold a degree in a relevant subject area such as sociology, social geography, international development, economics, law or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/ /training. Ideally you will have experience in a research environment in addition to your ability to establish effective relationships and work collaboratively with colleagues. A proven ability to work both independently, as part of a multidisciplinary team as well and the ability to prioritise your workload, is essential to the role

It is a condition of employment for this role that you will be required to provide evidence of immunisation against certain vaccine preventable diseases.

What We Can Offer

This is a full-time, fixed term position for up to 12 months at Professional Level 05.

The full-time equivalent base salary will be in the range $70,796.58 - $78,852.96 plus super of up to 17%. The total FTE package will be in the range $82,832 - $92,258
