About Kowanyama State School

We are a friendly and welcoming school community that remains committed to quality education for all children. We are a very remote Indigenous community school with students from pre-prep to year ten, all of whom are EAL/D learners, speaking one or more traditional languages at home. Our dedicated team are always energetic, enthusiastic and focussed in our efforts to promote positive and sustainable change through a supportive school environment. We have a strong focus on literacy and numeracy, and devote a significant amount of time and resources into these key areas.

Located 90 minutes by air or 8 hours by vehicle from Cairns, the remote community of Kowanyama is 20km inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria on the banks of Magnificent Creek. The community is a popular destination for camping and fishing, and while a vehicle is not needed to move about the community, if you wish to enjoy the idyllic outdoor life on the Cape York Peninsula, a 4WD and boat are a must!

Local amenities include a general store, primary health care centre, canteen, guest house, multi-purpose centre (with fitness equipment), camping grounds, post office and banking facilities. Kowanyama is accessible by road most of the year depending on weather, road conditions and the capability of your vehicle. Both Skytrans and Hinterland Aviation offer a regular passenger service weekdays from Cairns as well as offering air freight services.

Please note Kowanyama is an Alcohol Management Plan community.
