Senior Psychologist Education, School Counselling & Telepsychology Rural and Remote School

The NSW Department of Education provides, funds and regulates education services for NSW students from early childhood to secondary school, delivering world-class education through its public schools and providing funding support to non-government schools. We employ, develop and support teachers, leaders and other staff to deliver the best outcomes for students and to advance the wellbeing of Aboriginal people.

The Senior Psychologist Education School Counselling and Telepsychology Rural and Remote Schools provides high quality psychological services to rural and remote NSW schools. They work closely with these schools, other members of the school counselling service, members of educational services teams and external agencies to improve student learning and wellbeing outcomes.

The Senior Psychologist Education School Counselling and Telepsychology Rural and Remote Schools provides professional leadership in the delivery of psychological services to rural and remote school communities, including communities impacted by serious incidents. They play a key leadership role in coordinating responses to address an identified wellbeing need in a rural or remote community. When required this may include leading a psychological response team assembled from within the school counselling service to respond to a specific need. The Senior Psychologist Education School Counselling and Telepsychology Rural and Remote Schools will be required to travel at times in order to support schools and school communities. They will also have an understanding of issues related to providing telepsychology services.

Senior Psychologist Education School Counselling and Telepsychology Rural and Remote Schools will not be required to teach or undertake teaching duties as defined by the Teacher Accreditation Act 2004 as amended.

Key accountabilities

  • Applies psychological expertise to enhance and support the cognitive, emotional, social, physical and spiritual wellbeing of students in rural and remote communities
  • Coordinates and delivers high quality evidence-based psychology interventions in consultation with local school counselling teams, learning and support teams, educational services teams including Networked Facilitators and local agencies that are tailored to the needs of students in rural and remote school communities, including students with disabilities and complex support needs.
  • Leads the building of strong and ongoing relationships with schools, school communities and stakeholders including local school counselling staff and Aboriginal organisations, through delivering professional learning, planning and participating in whole school programs and supporting community initiatives related to mental health and wellbeing
  • Builds capacity in rural and remote school and counselling staff to support student wellbeing and mental health.
  • Supports local school counselling team, school executive and the Leader Psychology Practice, Rural and Remote Schools in coordinating provision of psychological support to schools experiencing serious incidents and natural disasters
  • May provide board approved supervision for school counselling staff working towards registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
  • Engages in professional practice supervision with the Leader Psychology Practice and where required, implements the procedures of the Professional Practice Framework for the NSW School Counselling Service
  • Coordinates and maintains systems and procedures, including team service itineraries and allocated financial budgets, to facilitate effective service delivery.
Essential Requirements
  • Registration as a psychologist.
  • Valid and current Working with Children Check clearance
  • Current driver’s licence and ability to travel between work sites
