JOB DESCRIPTION

Gladstone West State School is seeking a passionate and innovate Youth Worker to support disengaged and disadvantaged students to enhance educational outcomes. As a key member of the school support staff and student support team, the successful applicant will provide individual support, case management and, where appropriate, group support to students to maximise their engagement with education and training. The Youth Worker will report to the Guidance Officer and liaise with other school personnel to support students with social, emotional or behaviour problems.

About Gladstone West State School

Gladstone West State School is a co-educational primary school situated in Boles Street, Gladstone. The school grounds cover a full residential block and have pedestrian access from Boles St, Breslin St, Quoin St & Curtis St.

The school is surrounded by beautiful gardens and is proud of the many facilities it offers to students. These include a performing arts centre, a special education program, a resource centre that boasts two modern technology hubs and a video studio, tennis courts, multi-purpose courts, large oval and green play spaces.

Gladstone West State School was opened in 1966 and has developed a reputation for high quality education and student achievement in academic, sporting and performing arts.

About You

The successful candidate must have the ability to operate autonomously and will be required to perform their role with limited supervision. A knowledge of the Oneschool program would be beneficial.

Previous training and experience using social & emotional programs such as Rock & Water, How Does Your Engine Run and Drumbeat will be advantageous. The successful applicant will work a minimum of 27.5 hours, Monday to Friday during school terms. ADO arrangements will allow paid time off in school holiday periods.

Your Role

As the Youth Worker you will have responsibility for the following:

  • Be part of the professional team working with the school and the community and liaise with students, teachers, parents, guidance officers, special needs teacher, administrative officers, officers of welfare agencies and other government departments.
  • Monitor the attendance policy as a means of increasing awareness of students experiencing problems and allow for intervention before such problems get out of hand.
  • Forge links between the school and families of students who show persistent absence from schooling to encourage students' continuous attendance at school and to assist students determine future educational requirements.
  • Identify and provide appropriate assistance to students experiencing difficulties at school and/or at home which may put them at risk of leaving school prematurely.
  • Maintain spreadsheets, data bases and accurate record keeping.
  • Contribute to a positive, caring and supportive school image in the community.
  • Advise the Principal of students who may be at risk (at home or in the school environment).
  • Home visits with student/s and their families to advise and provide strategies for a more positive educational experience.
  • Developing and implementing programs dealing with social skills/assertiveness/self-esteem/etc.
  • Coordinating strategies and procedures to counter cause/s of avoidance of school situation.
  • Liaising between school community members such as student, fellow students, teachers, administration, parents and Guidance Officer in understanding strategies to regain more positive educational outcomes for the individual.
When working in regulated employment an employee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.
