Position Information

Merewether High School is an academically selective high school located in Newcastle. Core values of integrity, diversity and excellence underpin a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum to drive academic achievement. The school caters for 1085 students from a wide geographical area, including 16 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

High expectations of all students are maintained, consistent with each student’s ability to ensure they achieve their personal best. Selection Criteria

Approval to teach Legal Studies and Geography (7-10), approval and/or willingness to teach Business Studies and Economics.

Demonstrated excellence in classroom practice including the ability to deliver engaging lessons which build a culture of high expectations, and emphasize deep content knowledge and skill development.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate as part of a faculty team in developing, implementing, evaluating and sharing quality teaching and learning programs.

Strong understanding of the needs of high potential and gifted students and the ability to challenge students to achieve their personal best.

Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with the capacity to build strong relationships with teachers, students, parents and the community.


An unconditional full approval to teach is a requirement. If you do not hold a full approval to teach with the NSW Department of Education, you are required to commence the application process at the same time as you apply for this teaching opportunity.
