South Thornlie Primary School (PS) is seeking to employ an energetic, highly committed and dedicated Deputy Principal with strong research-based current curriculum knowledge and outstanding leadership and interpersonal skills.

At South Thornlie PS we are focused on creating an environment that enables students to reach their full potential. The staff are committed, hard working and willing to go above and beyond for each other and for the students. We all share ownership, accountability and responsibility to the school community and the progress of our students.

Strong curriculum leadership and demonstrated experience of implementing school improvement and change management processes will be essential. They will work collaboratively as part of a cohesive, team oriented and solutions focused Administration Team. The successful applicant must be committed to a consultative model of leadership and have a focus on building and supporting distributed leadership across the school.

The Deputy Principal will be highly organised and motivated with a demonstrated capacity to establish and sustain effective collaborative approaches to lead whole school improvement, instructional practice and curriculum development with a strong focus on English, Maths, Technology and Early Childhood. They will also need to deliver professional learning and be able to demonstrate high levels of teaching proficiency for modelling teaching strategies in these areas. They will be able to demonstrate a commitment to continual improvement evidenced with explicit, measured outcomes and effective data analysis which results in a cohesive, connected approach to curriculum and pedagogical development across the school. They will lead staff across the school to achieve the whole school initiatives and Business Plan targets.

At South Thornlie PS we value the whole child. We believe in the importance of addressing both the academic needs and social emotional well being of our students and in working in partnership with parents and our wider community. As Deputy Principal you will need to have skills and leadership experience in the areas of parent and community engagement, partnership development, coordination and implementation. Experience in managing student behaviour and in working with EAL/D students and their families, leading of the Aboriginal Cross Cultural Standards, coordinating and collaborating with University students in the areas of social work, counselling and external agencies will be highly advantageous.

This selection process will initially be used to fill the above vacancy. Applicants assessed as suitable during this selection process may be considered for other similar vacancies that occur throughout our school for up to 12 months following this initial appointment. This includes circumstances where this position becomes subsequently vacant should the successful applicant decline or vacate the advertised position. 

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements:

  • Capacity to provide effective leadership in a diverse range of educational settings;
  • High level of interpersonal and public relations skills that demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships to achieve planned outcomes;
  • Professional knowledge and the ability to apply this knowledge to ensure a high level of educational outcomes for all students (e.g. Aboriginal students, students from diverse ethnic backgrounds and students with special needs).
  • Capacity to manage staff, physical and financial resources.

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;
  • hold a recognised qualification in teaching and be currently registered or eligible for registration to teach in Western Australia;
  • obtain a current Department of Education Criminal Record Clearance prior to commencement of employment; and
  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.


Employees will be required to:

  • complete the Department’s induction program within three months of commencement;
  • complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • complete the Department’s training in Accountability and Ethical Decision-Making within six months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
