The Opportunity

This PhD scholarship is an important part of the Australian Research Council funded project Diversifying Music in Australia: Gender Equity in Jazz and Improvisation. A team led by Associate Professor Rob Burke with Professor Margaret Barrett, Professor Cat Hope, Dr Clare Hall, Dr Louise Devenish, Dr Nicole Canham and the successful PhD candidate will undertake the study over the next 3 years.

This research project aims to develop new knowledge about historical and contemporary practices of inclusion, exclusion and participation in Australian Jazz and Improvisation (AJ&I) practices. The project team will study and identify the individual, collective and institutional facilitators and constraints on gendered participation in these practices. The mixed method design incorporates qualitative and quantitative methodologies drawing on professional, community and education sectors in both contemporary and historical Australian contexts. The structures and freedom within AJ&I idioms provides frameworks that are transferable and scalable to other music genres. The intended outcomes include recommendations for industry and education policy, practice and further research that will benefit the sector's sustainability. The research aims are to:

Map current and historic practices of gendered inclusion and exclusion in AJ&I;
Interrogate the beliefs and values that underpin the AJ&I sector;
Identify facilitators and constraints on FI & GNC musicians’ career development;
Inform policy, practice and further research in the broader Australian music sector.

The successful applicant will join the research team and will undertake their own distinct PhD project that aligns with the above project aims. The details of the PhD project are open to negotiation and we are interested to hear your proposals.

The PhD candidate will undertake data generation in one of the case studies (Jazz and Improvisation Career Developments/Pathways: intergenerational study of senior, current and emerging female leaders in jazz). They will also be mentored in ethnographic methodology, research design, ethical knowledge and practice, data collection and analysis, literature reviews and development of publications.

Undertaking this PhD as part of a larger project has several advantages. First, the successful candidate will be integrated into a prestigious and competitive Australian Research Council funded project and will have access to funding to support fieldwork, travel, and conference attendance. Second, the candidate will receive expert supervision from research leaders in music, education and gender studies. Finally, the candidate will benefit from collaborative opportunities such as co-authored publications, interviews, and connections with industry, including an industry round table conference as part of the project.

Candidate Requirements

The successful applicant will have an outstanding academic track record and demonstrable interest in Australian jazz and improvised music and practitioners. Demonstrated expertise in the following: qualitative research methods, education, gender and sexualities studies and music performance are desirable.

Applicants must fulfil the criteria for PhD admission at Monash University, which includes English language proficiency skills. In its assessment, the Committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian or New Zealand bachelor's degree with first class honours or qualifications (including international) and/or research experience deemed equivalent by the University. Scholarship holders must be enrolled full-time and on campus. Please note: applicants who already hold a PhD will not be considered.

The successful applicant will be expected to enrol by 1 June 2021. However, there may be some flexibility as to the date of commencement.
