The Go4Fun Program is a healthy lifestyle program targeting overweight and obese children, aged between 7-13, and their families. The program was developed in the UK using an evidence-based approach. In 2009, the program was adapted for Australian families and implemented in NSW.

The Physical Activity Leader role will run programs across South Western Sydney Local Health District and will form part of a small team of multidisciplinary health workers. South Western Sydney Local Health District covers Bankstown, Liverpool, Fairfield, Campbelltown, Camden, Wingecarribee and Wollondilly Local Government Areas. This is an exciting opportunity for people with physical activity qualifications. The Physical Activity Leader will receive comprehensive training to run the adapted Go4Fun Program, use the adapted program delivery kit containing training manuals and resources needed to successfully deliver the 10-week program.

Job summary

The Physical Activity Leader’s primary responsibility is to successfully deliver the Go4Fun Program physical activity sessions and associated activities and support the theory leader and assist in planning of the sessions.

Duties and responsibilities

The Physical Activity Leader will report to the Go4Fun Manager and will be required to:

  • Attend a two-day leader training in Sydney
  • Attend a Child Protection and Cultural Awareness training course prior to commencement of the program
  • Facilitate 10 x 1-hour physical activity sessions of the Go4Fun Program plus pre-program set up, post-program tidy up and storage of equipment
  • Assist in collecting and recording children’s data at the pre- and post-program measurement sessions. The Physical Activity Leader will conduct the children’s fitness assessment (step test) and support the Theory Leader or Program Manager as needed with other relevant data collection
  • Support the Go4Fun Manager with recruitment of participants as required
  • Provide regular program updates to the Go4Fun Manager
  • Maintain the confidentiality of participants as required
  • Always act in the best interest of the children attending the Go4Fun Program and be sensitive to the issues faced by overweight and obese children and their parent / carers
  • Always be respectful and sensitive towards cultures and communities
  • Have an understanding of relevant local policies and procedures (e.g. Health and safety).
  • Be aware of child protection issues.
  • Undertake any other duty as requested by the Go4Fun Manager.

The leader’s responsibilities will require approximately 30 hours over the 10-week program, broken down as follows:

  • 10 x 1-hour physical activity sessions
  • Support the theory leader as required at 10 x 1 hour theory and/or measurement sessions
  • 9 hours of set up and tidy up time
  • Up to 2 hours for the Group Reward activity at the end of the Program (as required)

Qualifications for physical activity leaders

It is important that the Physical Activity Leader has previous experience working with children, can effectively oversee a group of approximately 15 children and be able to motivate increased participation. Additionally, the Physical Activity Leader is required to have:

  • current and relevant physical activity qualification
  • adequate professional indemnity and public liability insurance to cover any accidental injury or claim resulting from negligence.
  • a current Working with Children check
  • a current First Aid certificate

Providing the candidate meets all of the above and has successfully completed the Go4Fun leader training, they will be qualified to lead the physical activity sessions of the Go4Fun Program.

Pay rate

Leaders are contracted to run programs at an hourly rate of $55 per hour.
