The Centre for Advanced Imaging

The Centre for Advanced Imaging (CAI) was created in 2009 as a strategic initiative of The University of Queensland (UQ) and reflects the growing role of imaging in cutting-edge biotechnology and biomedical research at UQ.

The CAI has an internationally leading fleet of MR instrumentation. This includes ultra-high field human imaging instruments (7T) as well as the highest field NMR spectrometer in the southern hemisphere. These Centre also houses research groups in all areas of advanced imaging and spectroscopy (MRI, PET, CT, NMR, EPR etc.), providing a vibrant research community that drive technological developments in their areas of expertise. The resources and expertise in molecular characterisation at the CAI are focused at translating fundamental discoveries into commercial products in amongst others the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors. An opportunity exists to join the CAI to drive a research program in structural biology focused at development of novel therapeutics targeting various channelopathies including chronic pain.

Further details on the Centre for Advanced Imaging may be obtained from its website http://www.cai.uq.edu.au/.

About This Opportunity

The primary purpose of this position is to design and structurally characterise a panel of novel multi-domain peptides and evaluate their potential as analgesic leads using a combination of cell-based and in vivo assays. This involves use of advanced methods in molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics. The person will produce a panel of peptides using recombinant bacterial expression, including intein based vectors for in vivo ligation of multidomain proteins. The candidate will also be expected to supervise honours, masters and doctoral students, write funding applications and present their work at relevant forums.

This position is located at our picturesque St Lucia campus, renowned as one of Australia’s most attractive university campuses, and located just 7km from Brisbane’s city centre. Bounded by the Brisbane River on three sides, and with outstanding public transport connections, our 114-hectare site provides a perfect work environment – you can enjoy the best of both worlds: a vibrant campus with the tradition of an established university.

You should also have a strong desire to develop a successful and highly productive research career in structural biology, good general research skills, a strong methodological background, excellent analytic skills, very good writing abilities, and the capacity to work with multidisciplinary research teams.

You will also possess a PhD in Structural Biology (Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or Imaging)

You must have ongoing unrestricted work rights in Australia to apply for this opportunity.

We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Our Diversity and Inclusion webpage contains further information if you require additional support. Accessibility requirements and/or adjustments can be directed to recruitment@uq.edu.au.
