Under broad direction, the Animal and Human Research Ethics Officer provides assistance to the Manager, Research Ethics and Compliance for the coordination of support and administration in relation to the University’s research ethics, biosafety and biosecurity obligations and compliance.

The Animal and Human Research Ethics Officer will ensure that research activities are undertaken in accordance with the Australian Code for the Responsible Conduct of Research; National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research; Australian code for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes; applicable State and Commonwealth requirements; and all applicable legislation, including the Gene Technology Act 2000. The Research Ethics Officer will also provide a support role in the improvement of processes and systems to streamline the research ethics processes and to raise the profile of the Research Ethics & Compliance area in general.

The position will work closely with the Chairs/Deputy Chairs of the Human Research Ethics and Animal Ethics Committees and report directly to the Manager, Research Ethics and Compliance.

Key Position Responsibilities

The Animal and Human Research Ethics Officer is accountable for:

  • Providing administrative support to the Human Research Ethics and Animal Ethics committees and to the committee chairs/deputy chairs to ensure compliance with legislative and statutory requirements and national research ethics and integrity guidelines.
  • Providing administrative support to the Institutional Biosafety Committee and the Committee Chair/Deputy Chair as required.
  • Taking minutes at committee meetings and finalising feedback for applicants as required.
  • Promoting awareness of ethical issues related to the conduct of research and providing support and advice to researchers as required.
  • Assisting in the design, coordination and delivery of training and professional development for researchers and students in undertaking research which requires ethics approval and understanding the ethics approval processes.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Research Ethics and Compliance, reviewing processes and implementing changes to improve ethical services to research staff and research students.
  • Maintaining knowledge of changes to statutory requirements and guidelines relating to human and animal ethics, biosafety, biosecurity and other related issues and disseminating those changes to relevant researchers.
  • In consultation with the Manager, Research Ethics and Compliance, preparing accurate data and advice for internal and external reporting requirements.
  • Any other responsibilities in line with the level of the position as assigned by the Supervisor and/or the University.
Key Position Capabilities
  • Completion of a degree with relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and competence in providing executive level secretariat support for ethics committees, including taking of minutes.
  • Undertake review of applications and amendments as required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including demonstrated capacity to provide advice and respond to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Practical experience in the application of risk principles in relation to research ethics and integrity.
  • Good organisational skills, including a capacity to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • An understanding of the University research environment, including the funding of research and policy context in which research administration operates.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation and guidelines and the operation of research ethics committees.
