JOB DESCRIPTION

We are seeking an organised and flexible Teacher Aide (Language Model - Auslan) to work in the beautiful Far North Queensland region. You will work with Deaf/Hard of Hearing Auslan students, to support them to feel they belong, are understood, and have Deaf role models like them so they have the best chance of succeeding. This position will require you to support a number of schools in the Cairns area, so travel to different schools is required. Applicants located in other regions will be considered (services can be negotiated to be provided via videoconferencing). This is an immediate start, temporary position for 12 months with the possibility of annual extension. Part-time, job share appointments will be considered. A probation period of 3 months will apply to all successful applicants. This part-time position consists of 27.5 hours per week.

Your Role

This position is based at Parramatta State School Cairns reporting to the Principal Advisor Auslan. You will provide high level language model support for Deaf/Hard of Hearing students learning Australian Sign Language (Auslan), Educational Interpreters, parents and teachers.

About You

Previous experience as an Auslan Language Model is not necessary however applicants must be able to demonstrate a high-level Auslan skills and comprehensive knowledge and understanding of the Deaf Community and its culture. Applicants that are Deaf/Hard of Hearing are strongly encouraged to apply.

Applicants for this position must be willing to undertake appropriate training/proficiency testing in the production of Auslan as determined by the department.

Key Tasks

As an Teacher Aide (Language Model - Auslan), you will have responsibility for the following key tasks onsite at schools or via videoconferencing.

  • Provide a language model for students learning Australian Sign Language (Auslan), their educational interpreters, parents and teachers
  • Provide intervention where students experience difficulties in communication
  • Collate and analyse students' Auslan language samples.
  • Assist in the deaf/hard of hearing student's understanding of the education program
  • Provide classroom, school level support to enable the learning environment to be inclusive and relevant, with the health and safety of students a high priority.
  • Plan, in collaboration with teachers and deliver education programs in the use of Auslan to groups of staff, parents and students.
  • Provide support to class teachers and teachers of the deaf during classroom activities through the preparation of teacher-designed materials for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Assist the deaf/hard of hearing student to develop confidence, independence and a sense of wellbeing

Please note that Deaf/Hard of Hearing students may also have additional disabilities which will require the successful applicant to be flexible and adaptable, using Auslan or Key Word Signing as appropriate for the context and student's needs. Professional Development support will be provided to successful applicants.

When working in regulated employment an employee must have a current Working with Children Clearance (blue card) issued by Blue Card Services.
