You’ll be given the opportunity to challenge yourself, build on your skills, and make a significant contribution to a workplace that’s filled with energetic and inspiring people. Talent thrives here – and so do truly satisfying careers.

The Opportunity

The Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, comprising of ten schools is the largest faculty at Monash University and offers the most comprehensive suite of professional health training in Victoria. It consistently ranks in the top 40 universities worldwide for clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences.

Contributing to the global health care agenda, the Faculty aspires to lead in all areas of research activity and influence local, national and international policy to improve health and social outcomes and health inequalities. Monash has made a major impact in the world of medical research and become globally recognised for our quality education of over 41,000 doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Monash’s School of Rural Health (MRH) has a reputation for providing exciting opportunities and has recently experienced a period of transformation resulting in significant growth. MRH is the oldest and largest rural clinical school in Australia, with a 350 strong team of geographically dispersed staff, working to educate medical students in rural Victoria to meet the future needs of Victoria’s rural health workforce.

With eight clinical teaching sites, its footprint stretches from Mildura in the north-west to Bairnsdale in the south-east, and operates through two distinct hubs: one in the Loddon Mallee Region in north-west Victoria and one in the Gippsland region in south-east Victoria.

The Professor and Head of School of Rural Health is an important leadership role, particularly now when rural communities have been so affected by drought, bushfires and COVID-19. MRH provides extensive positive impacts on rural, regional and Indigenous communities, through curriculum innovation in medical education programs and community engagement activities, delivered through state of the art teaching facilities, information technology and video-conferencing. The stage is set for developing a sustainable rural medical workforce, but consistent development and innovation is required including additional capacity for research and influence of the rural health agenda.

As well as the structural, administrative and academic components of the role, it’s necessary for the Head of School to also influence and contribute at the highest level of policy and strategy to help drive solutions and reform that delivers quality healthcare that rural and remote residents actually want and need.

As Head of School, you’ll be expected to contribute to the advancement of the Rural Health’s student outcomes, research and partnerships to advocate for rural and regional medical student placements, and to contribute to Faculty Executive more broadly. Additionally, while each site is distinct, a cohesive, and consistent whole of school approach needs to underpin operations. The role involves significant collaboration, large and small scale stakeholder influence and management, from senior figures in Federal Government to local healthcare providers and community leaders.

To be considered for this opportunity you must have:

  • A doctoral qualification or equivalent accreditation and standing and recognised as a leading authority in the relevant discipline.
  • A current medical registration with the Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency (APHRA).
  • Demonstrated experience working within complex governance structures and in various facets of academic management including the necessary leadership, strategic planning, financial, human resources, communications, and decision-making skills needed to manage a school.
  • Evidence of collaborative and interdisciplinary research projects and the ability to foster a research culture with less-experienced researchers.
  • Demonstrated ability to attract external funding in the form of both national competitive grants and other research income and in building links with industry, government, funding and professional bodies.
  • Evidence of innovation in curriculum development, course design and course management and proven excellence in teaching.

This role is a full-time position; however, flexible working arrangements may be negotiated.

At Monash University, we are committed to being a Child Safe organisation. This position at the University will require the incumbent to hold a valid Working with Children Check and a satisfactory Police Check.

The successful applicant will need to possess a current valid Finance check.
