The University of Queensland Rural Clinical School

The University of Queensland Rural Clinical School (UQRCS) envisages securing a self-sustaining medical workforce for regional Queensland through excellence in medical education, research and community service. With a footprint encompassing the greater part of central and western regional Queensland, the Rural Clinical School comprises four clinical sites - Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Hervey Bay and Toowoomba. Significant investment in people and training infrastructure at each site provides the operational focus for a network of smaller clinical training locations in host communities across the state. With a recurrent budget of up to $9 million per annum provided through the Australian Government's Rural Health Multidisciplinary Training (RHMT) program and a capital works portfolio in excess of $20 million, UQRCS is a substantial enterprise.

About This Opportunity

As Primary Care Workforce Lead, your focus will be to promote rural and regional primary care and rural and regional generalism as positive, rewarding and sustainable medical careers in order to address the primary care workforce shortages across the Regional Training Hub (RTH) Central Queensland region.

Key to the success of this position will also be your effective academic leadership skills and your ability to build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders such as General Practice Colleges, Regional Training Organisations and Primary Health Networks as we prepare for the delivery of end-to-end medical education and training in Central Queensland as part of the Regional Medical Pathway.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Strategically monitor opportunities for RTH Central Queensland via visibility of the National Primary Health Care Reform Agenda and the National Rural Generalist Pathway.
  • Build effective partnerships at the local level to discuss mutual interest areas related to supporting GP Registrars in the Central Queensland region.
  • Support the wellbeing of rural GP Registrars and Rural Generalists by facilitating local initiatives such as GP training support networks, in collaboration with the Regional GP Training Organisation(s) and other workforce support agencies.
  • Build and progress the organisational reputation of UQ in the region as an employer of choice.
The location of this position within the Central Queensland region is open to negotiation, however travel will be required - including to our - as this position involves significant liaison with internal and external stakeholders in both the public and private health care sectors, including university and non-university personnel, community based organisations, hospitals, rural clinical teachers, and organisations within the fields of health and education.

Our Ideal Candidate

We are seeking an individual with expertise in the discipline of general practice together with extensive experience in a general or specialist capacity, including evidence of dissemination of new and innovative clinical techniques.

In addition to a medical qualification, postgraduate training in general practice e.g. FRACGP, FACRRM, and eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner in the State of Queensland, the individual must be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership roles in external activities that foster links within the profession and specifically, the discipline of general practice.
  • A record of building effective multi-disciplinary collaborative relationships within academic and health sectors, with colleagues and with strategic partners in rural health.
  • Proficiency in the provision of medical education programs at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, including the supervision, mentorship and nurturing of staff, medical students and junior doctors.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the challenges facing the rural health workforce and the communities they serve and a track record of successfully addressing these challenges.
  • A relevant postgraduate qualification and developed industry liaisons and professional contacts would be highly desirable.

What We Can Offer

This is a part-time (0.3 FTE), fixed term position ending 31 December 2021, at Academic Level C.

The full-time equivalent base salary is $121,939 - $140,603, plus super of up to 17% (total package available will be in the range of $142,669 - $164,506).
