About Griffith University

At Griffith University we believe in, strive for and celebrate the remarkable.

We are known for our high impact research, outstanding student experience, our commitment to social justice and our welcoming environment. We rank in the top 2% of universities worldwide and we're proud of our remarkable achievements, of our people and their passion for making a positive difference. Together we contribute to the development of knowledge and learning in an attractive environment which values excellence, equity, diversity, and innovation.

In response to COVID-19, and in recognition of the longer-term financial impact and challenges faced by Griffith and the broader higher education sector, the University established the Roadmap to Sustainability (R2S) Program to reshape the University for future success and sustainability.

Roadmap to Sustainability Program

In December 2020, following a consultation period with staff, changes to the University operating model were endorsed and implementation commenced. The R2S Program is now focused on transitioning to the future state operating model, embedding the changes, and ensuring the operational and financial outcomes are achieved.

The R2S Program is significant and represents a transformation agenda not experienced by the University in recent history. Most teams across the University have been impacted, either directly or indirectly, and are in the process of transitioning to new ways of working.

A Transition phase (now until mid 2021) has been defined to ensure a smooth and seamless shift to the future state operating model. This includes:

  • Transitioning people into new roles and teams, including reporting lines, knowledge transfer, learning and development
  • Configuring systems and policies to align with the new structures
  • Designing new ways of working and identifying process re-design and service improvement opportunities (e.g. automation) to realise efficiencies
  • Execute the rationalisation of program and course offerings through removal or changes to the delivery approach
  • Exploring further opportunities in non-salary spend and outsourcing of university services and activity

The program will then pivot towards Transformation (from mid 2021) to sustain and embed savings and provide an ongoing focus on efficiency. This will include:

  • Fulfilling the transformation agenda aligned to Griffith's Strategic Plan and strategic priorities, e.g. "Unleashing the potential of our people"
  • Establishing a future-fit culture that drives high performance and efficiency
  • Leveraging automation, systems and outsourcing to reduce the burden of administrative work
  • Developing the data and tools to recognise high performers (e.g. program and course framework, academic performance tool)
