The position sits within the School’s technical support team reporting to the Technical Services Coordinator at Burwood, who in turn is responsible to the Technical Manager. The position provides high-level technical and administrative support to the School’s teaching and research efforts.

As a Senior Technical Officer, you will liaise with Unit Chairs to support a range of practical teaching programs primarily in the molecular, genomic and cell science based disciplines and is required to calibrate and maintain a wide range of laboratory equipment.

You will work with academic, administrative and technical staff within the School and other faculties for the purpose of coordinating support efforts in teaching and research.

Based at Burwood location, this role is fixed term and needs flexibility in travel and may require infrequent work outside of business hours.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • provide high-level technical support to practical teaching and research programs of the School which may include the provision of technical expertise and advice or the demonstration and operation of analytical equipment and/or techniques to students and staff in both teaching and research programs
  • provide specialised technical support involving the calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment
  • assist with the development of new practical procedures in liaison with Unit Chairs and to trial new experiments to ensure their efficient implementation in practical classes
  • promote and ensure the implementation of all University policies that relate to the areas for which the position is responsible, in particular, those relating to equal opportunity, occupational health and safety and risk management

To be successful, you’ll have:

  • Bachelor Degree qualification in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
  • Proven technical aptitude for working with biological instrumentation and equipment
  • High level knowledge of molecular biology procedures and techniques and working in a lab environment
  • High level knowledge of OH&S principals with regards to chemical and biological safety including risk assessment implementation
  • Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills
  • Applicant will require work pattern flexibility. During Trimester periods, the span of the working day may increase to accommodate scheduling of undergraduate practical classes. Accrued hours can be claimed as TOIL.

Desirable Skills

  • Relevant experience in a University teaching laboratory
  • Level 2 First Aid Certificate
  • Experience with genomics, cell and tissue culture and histological techniques
