The LOOKOUT Koorie Cultural Advisor will work closely with schools to advocate for the educational and cultural needs of Aboriginal students in out-of-home care. The Koorie Cultural Advisor will draw on the capacity and expertise of the Divisional Koorie Education Manager, Koorie Engagement Coordinator and Koorie Engagement Support Officers to have a comprehensive and consistent approach to supporting Aboriginal students in out-of-home care. Working in collaboration with the Koorie Education Team, you will build the capacity of schools and Early Childhood Education and Care services to provide culturally appropriate supports and opportunities to build connection to culture. As part of the LOOKOUT Centre's multidisciplinary team, the role will contribute to the development of policy and practice to improve education outcomes in Victoria for students in out-of-home care.
This role provides for an exciting opportunity to work strategically, systemically and collaboratively to improve outcomes for aboriginal children and young people in out-of-home care. Working within the multidisciplinary LOOKOUT team, based within the North-Western Victoria Region's Early Childhood and School Support Division, the primary responsibilities of this role are to:
- Establish effective working relationships with key stakeholders
- Support schools and early childhood services to provide culturally appropriate environments
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with staff across the regional office
- Work closely with schools and early childhood services to advocate for the educational and cultural needs of Aboriginal students in out-of-home care
- Draw on the capacity and expertise of the regional Koorie Education Workforce to have a comprehensive and consistent approach to supporting Aboriginal students in out-of-home care
- Provide leadership in initiating service improvement
- With the LOOKOUT Advisor (Data), collate and analyse data specific to Aboriginal students in order to monitor attendance, engagement and achievement against agreed measures
The successful applicant will need to have a demonstrated ability, and the necessary experience, to work effectively with local Koorie communities, and extensive knowledge and understanding of Koorie culture, education and community needs. The position is an identified position and applicants must identify as aboriginal.
The position is a region-wide position and base office location is negotiable within the North-Western Victoria Region.
