Koorana Education Support Centre (ESC) are seeking to establish a pool for appointments to permanent and fixed term, full-time and part-time vacancies which may arise during the 2021 school year and up to the end of Term 1, 2022. Appointments can be made from the pool at any time for commencements within the 2021 school year up to the end of Term 1, 2022.

We are looking for extraordinary people who are keen to join a dedicated and passionate team who put the needs of students with disability first. As a team player who embraces hard work and collaboration you will create the required learning environment to encourage all of our students to reach their potential as embodied in our school motto, “Koorana Kids Can!”. In consort with the classroom teacher, our Special Needs Education Assistants are highly trained and skilled to design, implement and evaluate programs for students with intellectual disability, sensory impairment, physical disabilities, challenging behaviour and Autism Spectrum Disorder. The ability to demonstrate knowledge and applied experience in the use of evidence based programs to support learning for students with disability including the principles of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), Discrete Trial Training, Early Start Denver Model (ESDM), Positive Behaviour Support (PBS), Team Teach, TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and Communication related Handicapped Children), Sounds Write, Sensory Diets and Augmentative and Alternative (AAC) systems is highly desirable.

Skills in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) would be preferred and the physical capacity to work in a play based environment and undertake supervision of students with challenging behaviours is an integral part of the role.

All of our teaching and learning programs focus on a functional, relevant, engaging curriculum which improves students' independence skills in preparation for high school. Our high ratio of staff to students ensures that teaching and learning is highly individualised. The student is at the centre of all we do, we aim to work with therapists, families and caregivers to provide a balanced program which focuses on the whole child, meeting their academic, social and emotional needs.

The school is situated in Warnbro in the City of Rockingham, approximately 55 kilometres from Perth and caters for students with special educational needs and disabilities from Kindergarten to Year 6. Koorana ESC is co-located within Koorana Primary School and shares a P&C, library and whole school events.

To be suitable for this role, you will need to demonstrate the following work related requirements (selection criteria):

  • Effective written and oral communication skills, including report writing and the ability to effectively interact with students with special needs, and liaise with parents, teachers and community members and assist teachers in understanding students where necessary.
  • Effective interpersonal skills with the ability to contribute to a professional team and provide advice and evaluation in the development of the education program, including special education and therapy programs where they have been implemented.
  • Ability to assist professionals in the implementation and evaluation of education programs, including special education and, if required, occupational and/or physiotherapy programs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and physical disabilities in students and adolescents.
  • Effective organisational skills that will assist in the delivery of effective education programs and subsequent feedback and evaluation to teachers or psychologists.
  • Ability to assist with the general health and well-being of students

Employees will be required to:

  • provide evidence of eligibility to work in Australia for the term of the vacancy;

  • obtain or hold a current Working with Children Check.

Education Assistants working with Kindergarten students may be required to have, or be actively working towards, a Certificate lll in Education Support (or approved equivalent) in order to meet the educator-to-student ratio outlined in the National Quality Standard for Early Childhood Education and Care.

Approved equivalent qualifications are published by the Australian Children's Education and Care Quality Authority.


Employees will be required to:

  • Complete the Department’s induction program within three (3) months of commencement;
  • Complete any training specific to this role required by Departmental policy; and
  • Complete the Department’s training in Accountable and Ethical Decision-Making within six (6) months of appointment.

The Department applies a four (4) day breach period to this selection process.
